Massive Liverpool boost as midfield target presented at £20m discount amid serious club concern

Matheus Nunes and Declan Rice

Liverpool have been given a major lift in their hopes of bolstering the midfield this summer amid claims a Premier League star will be available at a £20million discount.

Liverpool need at least two new midfielders to move to Anfield ahead of next season to give manager Jurgen Klopp reliable players in the position, and ones that are also in their prime.

Jude Bellingham is their priority target. Admittedly, he is only 19 years old, but he is an exception given the fact he is already a top performer in both the German Bundesliga and Champions League.

Liverpool are also looking at potential signings from the Premier League. They have been linked with Fulham ace Joao Palhinha, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Mateo Kovacic of Chelsea.

But the Reds are also interested in Wolves’ Matheus Nunes. And a report has given Klopp a big boost when it comes to landing the 24-year-old.

Wolves have previously told any potential suitors that Nunes will only leave Molineux for £50million. The west Midlands side paid Sporting Lisbon a club-record £42million fee for him in August last year.

Wolves would like to keep Nunes on their books for a few more seasons, which explains why they have upped his valuation to £50m ahead of a potential exit.

But according to Football Insider, Wolves’ asking price could fall to as low as £30m if they are relegated to the Championship this season.

Liverpool backed to save £20m on Prem ace

Such a transfer would give Liverpool a £20m saving, which would help them to improve other positions in the team as well. Plus, Nunes would likely push hard for a Liverpool move if Wolves dropped down a league.

Currently sitting in 13th spot, Wolves are not one of the favourites to go down this term. However, the gap between 12th and 20th is surprisingly close and due to this Julen Lopetegui’s team are only three points above the bottom three.

To make matters worse for Wolves, five teams below them have an extra game to play. This could result in them getting sucked into a relegation battle.

Liverpool would be delighted if Wolves ended up getting into a relegation scrap. It would make Nunes consider his future and potentially hand in a transfer request.

And if Wolves’ relegation were to be confirmed, this would hand Liverpool a brilliant opportunity to snare Nunes at a reduced price.

Nunes could be a great player for Liverpool to sign alongside Bellingham. He will already boast one year of Premier League experience by the summer, which means he should not need too long to adapt at Liverpool. By operating in midfield with a top star like Bellingham, Nunes could reach a very high level.

Ultimately, Liverpool’s pursuit of the 24-year-old will depend entirely on Wolves’ situation. The Merseyside club would struggle to spend £50m on Nunes and £100m or more on Bellingham.

This is certainly a situation to watch over the coming months, as Wolves’ season finish could have a big influence on which midfielders Liverpool capture.

Meanwhile, Klopp is ready to start trimming his squad and a Liverpool player has already gone up for sale, according to a report.
