Frustrated Juventus have glimmer of hope Liverpool, Man Utd will spark De Ligt transfer frenzy with Chelsea

Matthijs de Ligt, Juventus v Lazio May 2022

Juventus reportedly hope Liverpool or Manchester United will join the race for Matthijs de Ligt, which would unblock stalling transfer progress with Chelsea.

The Dutch defender has impressed in Turin since his big-money move from Ajax in the summer of 2019. However, this summer could be the time for him to move on, with suitors circling for him.

Chelsea are the marquee Premier League club showing interest in De Ligt. They have a major hole at centre-back to fill following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

But Bayern Munich have more recently emerged as a De Ligt contender too. They only have three central defenders on their books and want more security.

Chelsea have been in talks with Juve and made a players-plus-cash offer for De Ligt. Still, the Blues have yet to get close to the transfer fee wanted by Juventus, who will not budge on their demands.

As a result, Corriere dello Sport now reports that Juve hope Liverpool or Man Utd will come in for De Ligt.

The Serie A giants reckon interest from Chelsea’s Prem rivals will spark them into life and convince them to pay what Juventus want for De Ligt.

Liverpool acted on such an impulse themselves in January, when Tottenham and West Ham opened talks with Luis Diaz.

Man Utd have had mixed success in such transfer scenarios. They nipped in on Lyon to sign left-back Tyrell Malacia but backed away from Liverpool over Darwin Nunez.

Chelsea getting closer to De Ligt

Chelsea made their first offer for De Ligt last week. However, Juve rejected a  €40million (£34.4million) proposal with Timo Werner thrown into the mix.

Nevertheless, Corriere dello Sport adds that the Blues are edging closer to Juventus’ terms.

They are planning a fresh offer for the defender worth between €70million (£60million) and €75million (£64million).

De Ligt to Chelsea could be on the cards

Juventus centre back De Ligt could be looking for a move away from Turin and Chelsea is definitely an option

Even then, the report adds that that will still not be enough for Juventus, who want closer to €100million (£86million).

Chelsea have a number of defensive targets including Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and are progressing talks on a number of fronts.

However, Liverpool are highly unlikely to engage in any bidding for De Ligt – at least not this summer.

Liverpool not after defender

The Reds have made three signings already this summer.

And while Nunez is the only true high-profile deal – the potential club-record signing replacing Sadio Mane – Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay reportedly represent the end of Liverpool’s incomings this summer.

Midfield is their priority next summer, with Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham mentioned.

For defenders, though, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is well-stocked. Ibrahima Konate is competing well with Joel Matip for a spot alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Joe Gomez a fourth option.

Man Utd may be a better bet for Juventus to get hopeful about over De Ligt. New manager Erik ten Hag is after a new centre-back amid doubt over the futures of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones.

Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez is their shortlist, but they could yet turn to De Ligt if the Martinez deal goes cold.

Of course, there is every chance yet that Chelsea will win the race for the Dutchman if they bow to Juventus’ demands.
