Liverpool swap deal with Euro giants ‘could work’ for Jurgen Klopp in January, says pundit

Liverpool should seriously consider swapping Roberto Firmino for Barcelona striker Memphis Depay in January, according to one pundit.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes a player exchange deal could suit both clubs and both players. With neither player first choice at their respective teams, Campbell says it could be a transfer for both teams to pursue.

Memphis looked destined to leave the Camp Nou in the summer. The Netherlands international is out of contract this season and Barca were understood to be open to the attacker leaving the club.

In fact the player is believed to have had a number of proposals to mull over, with Juventus and Chelsea believed to have held an interest in the player. But the former Manchester United man decided to stay put.

“I have decided to stay at Barça!” he wrote on Twitter at the start of the month. “Fully committed to contribute to the club’s sporting success.”

The 28-year-old has made two LaLiga appearances this season, scoring once. But the arrival of Robert Lewandowski has seen his chances of selection dwindle and a move could be in the offing. And an offer of first-team football maybe too good to turn down.

What is more, Futbol Total have suggested that Jurgen Klopp is ‘studying’ the idea of a swap deal involving Memphis and Firmino this winter.

Firmino, 30, is in a similar situation at Anfield. The Brazilian is not one of the first names on the team sheet anymore and he is out of contract in 2023.

He has started four games in the Premier League this season, but two of those games have seen him substituted. He, like Memphis, 28, has come under pressure from a new arrival in the form of Darwin Nunez.

Player swap deals are notoriously rare and hard to negotiate. But this potential deal could well suit both clubs and Campbell has given it his seal of approval.

Barcelona partial to a swap deal

“We have seen Barcelona do swap deals in the past,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“The one that springs to mind is Arthur [Melo] and [Miralem] Pjanic. They like a swap every now and again. If ever there was a club who would do that deal it is Barcelona.

“The bottom line is, if both players and both clubs were open to the swap it could work. I’m not sure if that is doable but if both players are up for it why not?

“Neither are regular starters at their clubs right now.”

Firmino has scored three goals and claimed three assists this season, but five of those came in the 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth.

Depay has scored once in three games so far this season.
