Liverpool face tough assignment to land €80m man that Klopp says ‘can run for ages’

Liverpool face a transfer battle with Real Madrid this summer after the LaLiga gianta reportedly made Nicolo Barella their top summer target.

Reeling from Sunday’s 4-0 home defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico, Los Blancos are expected to embark on a summer spending spree. And. according to El Nacional, the Spanish giants have made the Italy midfielder a top target.

Barella has been rumoured to be a target for Liverpool for the last 12 months.

The midfielder missed the two games against Liverpool in the Champions League recently due to suspension. But Klopp revealed his admiration for the 25-year-old.

“That Barella is not able to play is not bad for us! He’s a really good player,” Klopp said.

“He has all the things you want from a midfielder – he’s aggressive, he’s good technically, he can run for ages.”

According to Calciomercato last summer, Liverpool and Manchester United were admirers of Barella.

Liverpool are believed to have made an enquiry well before Barella’s starring role for the Azzurri at the Euros last summer.

Enrico Camelio from Radio Radio told the Calciomercato Show: “Liverpool asked for information for Barella, but for Inter they cannot be transferred. It ended there”.


Inter Milan tied Barella to a contract extension with until June 2026 in November, effectively protecting the value of their prized asset.

But Real are believed to be interested in the player, who Inter, per the source, rate in the €80m bracket.

Carlo Ancelotti is said to be looking for an upgrade on 32-year-old Toni Kroos.

Liverpool for their part as still hunting for a midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman left for Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expired at the end of last season.

Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have all had issues with their fitness. And Jordan Henderson, although under contract until 2025, will turn 32 in June.
