A Reds revolution is coming after Liverpool held talks with a former Tottenham man who’d replace a key figure whose exit shook Jurgen Klopp, per reports.
The upcoming summer promises to be a pivotal one over at Anfield. After years of competing for – and lifting – top honours, Liverpool have come crashing back down to earth with a bang this term.
The Community Shield is the only silverware they’ll lift and barring a late-season surge, Champions League qualification could go by the wayside too.
Missing out on the riches that competition provides is expected to play havoc with the club’s summer recruitment drive. Indeed, the Athletic’s ultra-reliable David Ornstein recently cited that factor as one of many reasons why Jude Bellingham will not be moving to Merseyside.
The bulk of Liverpool deals this summer are expected to come in the midfield. If the quality of Klopp’s current options wasn’t issue enough, the fact Arthur Melo, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all leaving means the Reds will lack for numbers too.
Liverpool had been lauded in the past for their near flawless work in the transfer windows. Michael Edwards worked wonders as sporting director before being replaced by his understudy, Julian Ward.
However, Ward announced back in November he’d be leaving Liverpool at season’s end. The Liverpool Echo reported his decision was met with ‘surprise and disappointment’ from those within the club – including Jurgen Klopp.
As yet, the Reds had not lined up a new sporting director to replace Ward who it’s since emerged will be joining Ajax.
However, according to sources in France, the first step towards igniting a Reds revolution in the transfer window has been taken.
Liverpool in talks with chief who signed Son, Alderweireld
Get French Football News report Liverpool have held talks with former Southampton and Tottenham chief, Paul Mitchell.
The 41-year-old is currently the sporting director of Monaco, though L’Equipe revealed in February he’ll leave the Ligue 1 outfit this summer. Per the report, Monaco hoped to retain Mitchell, but their efforts to extend his stay did not bear fruit.
GFFN state Mitchell has ‘held talks’ with Liverpool over the prospect of succeeding Ward as sporting director.
The Mirror add their take to the story, and after echoing the claims out of France, note Mitchell was previously sized up by Chelsea and Man Utd.
Mitchell has performed in a sporting director role at Southampton, Tottenham, RB Leipzig in the past.
His time at Spurs was particularly successful from a recruitment perspective given the likes of Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min were signed on his watch.
With a truly critical summer on the horizon at Anfield, Klopp and co. will hope Mitchell can repeat his past heroics and usher in a Reds revolution – assuming the talks lead to his appointment, of course.
