Arsenal legend Paul Merson is convinced that Liverpool still need to reinforce their midfield during the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had another successful campaign, despite missing out on the biggest prizes in the Premier League and Champions League trophies. However, they did finish runners-up in both competitions, as well as winning both domestic cups.

Liverpool have also bolstered their squad with the additions of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay.

The Reds have, however, also lost the likes Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi, while Neco Williams is also close to an exit.

But while the Anfield outfit are unlikely to bring in any more new faces, Merson thinks that is a mistake. The former Gunner also knows exactly who Klopp needs to sign to transform his engine room.

Speaking to SportsKeeda, he said: “I think Liverpool are crying out for a midfield player. I don’t think their midfield is strong enough.

Jude Bellingham is a good player, and I think he would be a great signing.

“Liverpool are currently relying solely on their full-backs for energy. Thiago’s not a box-to-box midfielder, and Jordan Henderson is another year older.

“They need legs in midfield, and Jude Bellingham could be that box-to-box presence for the side.”

Bellingham comes with a premium price tag

The 19-year-old is widely as one of the best young midfielders playing in Europe and won’t come cheap.

Borussia Dortmund want in excess of £100m for the England man. That figure is largely based on the fact that Bellingham still has three years left on his contract.

Despite his tender age, Bellingham is already closing in on 100 Dortmund appearances. During that time he has had a hand in 28 goals and is a big favourite of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Dortmund have, however, stood firm over Bellingham’s future at the club. They do not want to lose the former Birmingham man, having already sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City.

If that stance continues, then the summer of 2023 appears to be the best window to sign the midfielder.
