Paul Merson tells Klopp two world-class signings he needs to transform Liverpool into 2024 Premier League champions

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been informed of the two signings he desperately needs this summer if he wants the Reds to win the 2024 Premier League title.

The Merseysiders have let their own high standards drop away this season off the back of a difficult campaign. Indeed, they will finish the season trophyless after seeing their last remaining hopes of silverware dashed by Real Madrid in the Champions League. And for a side that came within a few matches of winning the Quadruple last season, that is quite a fall from grace.

In addition, the Reds also face a difficult time qualifying for the Champions League again next season. They are currently sixth, sitting seven points adrift of Tottenham in fourth. And while they have two games in hand, the real threat might actually come from Newcastle, who are five points ahead of Klopp’s team.

And with Brighton and potentially even Chelsea still in the mix, the race for fourth is likely to go down to the wire.

Issues for Liverpool have been widespread. A new-look attack which is still learning how and when best to press; a general lethargy in the squad; a series of difficult injuries; perhaps even a seven-year itch for Klopp.

However, the most common finger-pointing, if you like, lies towards Liverpool’s midfield.

Fabinho has looked jaded this season, while both Thiago and Jordan Henderson have endured spells on the sidelines. Furthermore, both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are poised to move on as free agents.

As a result, the Reds manager will look to sign at least two new midfielders this summer.

Klopp urged to push through deal for Mount and Bellingham

His No 1 target remains Jude Bellingham, though any deal for the Borussia Dortmund man looks difficult to pull off. And with the Bundesliga side potentially seeking around £120m, Klopp may be forced to turn his attention elsewhere.

To that end, a pair of Wolves star are coming under their watchful gaze amid claims of a double £80m raid on Molineux.

Another strongly linked target is Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. His deal at Stamford Bridge expires next summer and talks over an extension are yet to see an agreement reached.

As a result, a move to Anfield appears a genuine possibility.

And now pundit Paul Merson is adamant that Liverpool can transform their fortunes if they can land both England internationals.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Mason Mount was by far Chelsea’s best player last season. He was outstanding. Whoever gets Mason Mount has got the biggest result ever. The kid can play. It’s bad business by Chelsea – they should give him what he’s asking for. You don’t offload your best players.

“If Liverpool go and get Mount and then Jude Bellingham, who could also go to Liverpool, you’ve got a title-contending team. Why would you want to chance that? Why would you make them stronger? I’m a huge fan of Mount, he’s a top-class player.”

Liverpool do look well placed to land Mount amid claims he will be put up for sale by the Blues.

However, their prospects of landing Bellingham look far harder given the competition and BVB’s valuation. Nonetheless, Klopp has already done plenty of groundwork over the deal and will keep pushing to bring him to Anfield.
