Going into the most crucial game of the season, the predicted Liverpool team to face Wolves could see Mohamed Salah miss out – from the start at least.
Liverpool have clung onto Manchester City in the title race for the entire season. Despite a slip up, drawing 1-1 with Tottenham a few games back, the Reds have remained within touching distance, and are just a point behind City.
They managed a result in each of their last two Premier League games. They won a closely-contested match with Aston Villa 2-1 a couple of matches ago.
In their last tie, they came from behind against Southampton, pulling two goals back to beat the Saints 2-1. They were missing their prised goalscoring asset, Salah, during that game.
Manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledged in his pre-match press conference that the Reds star may miss out, to minimise the risk of aggravating the injury that kept him out last game.
He mentioned that there is “no chance” they take any risks, and Salah “does not want” to take risks either.
Precautions were also taken with Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho’s injuries in the last match, though Klopp mentioned it “looks all good” for them.
Last time out – Southampton 1-2 Liverpool
Klopp changed his team drastically last game to rest his stars ahead of a crucial clash on the last day, which could see Liverpool win the title.
Alisson Becker started in net, as is so often the case. The full-back positions were utilised by Joe Gomez – who sustained an injury – and Kostas Tsimikas. Ibrahima Konate and goalscorer Joel Matip started as the two centre-backs.
The three across midfield were lesser utilised players, Curtis Jones, James Milner and Harvey Elliott.
Neither Salah nor Sadio Mane featured against the Saints. Diogo Jota was the only regular starter with a place in the side. He played on the left flank, with Roberto Firmino in the middle, and the scorer of Liverpool’s first, Takumi Minamino, on the right.
Predicted Liverpool team against Wolves
A stronger side is expected for this fixture, given the Premier League title is at stake.
Alisson will no doubt remain in net. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson are likely to return and play as the full-backs. With Van Dijk being rested last time out, it is likely he will return to the side too, to partner Matip at centre-back.
Fabinho could return from the sidelines as well. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are likely to play either side of him, in the midfield.
With another crucial game coming up, in the Champions League, it is doubtful that Salah will be risked – from the start at least.
The front three, therefore, could see Luis Diaz play alongside Mane and Jota.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Diaz, Jota, Mane
