Questionable Liverpool transfer plan doubles, as player with Man Utd past is added to Klopp wish list

Phil Neumann and Ron-Robert Zieler

Liverpool were recently linked with a goalkeeper from the German second tier – and now it is being suggested that they are looking at another.

Last week, some information emerged about how Liverpool might want to reshape their goalkeeping department. Although Alisson Becker is safe as their number one, they might need to change who is supporting him.

Caoimhin Kelleher might go looking for more gametime elsewhere, while Adrian may leave at the end of his contract in the summer.

With that in mind, it was recently reported that Liverpool could be looking at SV Sandhausen goalkeeper Patrick Drewes. It was a link that may have raised eyebrows, given his lack of experience in any top flight.

But now, Liverpool are being linked with a second goalkeeper who plies his trade in the 2. Bundesliga.

According to Bild, another option Liverpool could consider is Hannover captain Ron-Robert Zieler.

Now, Zieler has a higher pedigree than Drewes. In fact, he was a member of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in 2014, as one of Manuel Neuer’s deputies.

Rewinding further, he began his career with Manchester United. Zieler was never able to make an appearance for them, though.

His second chance in the Premier League came with Leicester City in the 2016-17 season. He featured nine times in the top flight and twice in cup competitions for the Foxes.

Since then, Zieler has been back in his native Germany with Stuttgart, Hannover and Koln. Hannover are his current employers, although – despite their insistence of having no knowledge of the interest – they could lose him to Liverpool.

Ron-Robert Zieler might make more sense for Liverpool

According to the report from Bild, Zieler is an option for the Reds as they aim to modify their goalkeeping department. Crucially, thanks to coming through the ranks at Manchester United, he would not take up one of their non-homegrown slots in their squad.

Like Adrian, Zieler will be out of contract at the end of the season. Therefore, he should be easily attainable for Liverpool if they want to shake things up.

Turning 34 in February, Zieler would be unlikely to feature much at Liverpool, but his experience could be useful. He has played 15 times for Hannover this season, only conceding 17 goals.

Perhaps Zieler would make slightly more sense than Drewes as a Liverpool goalkeeper target. He has a better pedigree – spending nine seasons of his career in the Bundesliga – and may be more used to the surroundings of a big club.

It may even be possible for Liverpool to take both of the Germans, as their number two and number three respectively. But they will have to be sure their competition for Alisson is strong enough.

Kelleher has been useful in that regard, but they probably can’t stand in his way much longer. Therefore, they will need to regenerate – and Zieler might be their man.
