Club chief hints at ‘philosophy’ issue in denial of links with crucial Liverpool asset

RB Leipzig have clarified that they are not looking to poach sporting director Michael Edwards from Liverpool.

There are some concerns at Anfield about Edwards’ future. The transfer mastermind has been a crucial figure behind their success in recent years.

However, his contract is expiring at the end of the season and there are rumours that he could be leaving the club.

It would be a major blow for Liverpool and their manager Jurgen Klopp, who has benefited greatly from the work Edwards has done in the transfer market.

Edwards has earned a good reputation thanks to his ability to operate within a low net spend. He has acquired top talents for good prices and managed to sell some fringe players for decent money.

If he leaves Liverpool, whoever appoints him next will be getting one of the best around. One club that had been linked was RB Leipzig.

Reports from Bild earlier this week revealed that Leipzig were looking at Edwards as a replacement for Markus Krosche, who left in the summer.

Their sporting director role remains vacant – but they have now confirmed Edwards will not be filling it.

“Michael Edwards will not be our sporting director,” CEO Oliver Mintzlaff told DAZN (via the Liverpool Echo).

“The fact is that we are looking for a sporting director who fits the club, our philosophy and direction.”

Liverpool will reportedly rival Arsenal for Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, as Borussia Dortmund also said to be interested, with more updates on Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and PSG's interest in RB Salzberg attacker Karim Adeyemi.

Liverpool are understood to still want to keep Edwards, but there has not been much progress since the summer.

A move to Leipzig is definitely off the cards judging by Mintzlaff’s statement, though.

It follows previous reports that Edwards does not have a next club lined up yet, even though he is ready for a new challenge after Liverpool.

He had also been linked with Real Madrid and Newcastle United but no decision has been made yet.

Edwards seals Liverpool parting gift

TEAMtalk has exclusively revealed that Liverpool look set to win the race to sign Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho in what could be one of Edwards’ final acts for the club.

Carvalho is in demand after a fine start to the Championship season.

We understand he has attracted interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham.

The winger also has admirers in mainland Europe, namely Benfica, Porto, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon and Monaco.

But Liverpool are confident of securing his signature in what may be a parting gift from Edwards.
