Liverpool are reportedly exploring a shock deadline-day move for a Sunderland midfielder, despite agreeing a deal to sign Bayern Munich star Ryan Gravenberch.

The Reds are expected to officially announce a £34.2miilion deal to sign the Dutchman on Friday, having tracked the talented 21-year-old over the last few weeks on the summer transfer window.

However, their focus is not just one one signing on deadline day, with Football Insider revealing that the Anfield outfit also wanting Black Cats star Dan Neil on board as well.

Liverpool are said to have been scouting Neil over the course of the last year and view him as a perfect replacement for Jordan Henderson, after the former Reds skipper quit Merseyside for Saudi Arabia.

The Premier League side will have to act quickly to get their man though, with Football Insider adding that Crystal Palace, Brentford and Burnley could make moves of their own in the final hours of the window.

Neil has been one of Sunderland’s stand-out performers early in the new campaign, playing every minute of their four Championship games.

The 21-year-old, who has come through the ranks on Wearside, is regarded as one of the best young talents in English football’s second tier.

He has far made 110 appearances for the Black Cats since making his senior breakthrough, scoring seven goals in the process.

No Neil fee mentioned but player won’t come cheap

Neil is, however, still under contract until June 2026, so Sunderland can demand a decent transfer fee for his services.

It could be a troubling day for the Championship side, with Southampton closing in on a move for striker Ross Stewart, while Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts are also being tipped to move on before the 11pm deadline.

As for Liverpool, if he does sign Neil will enter the midfield rotation at Anfield alongside the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.

Klopp’s men are back in action when they host Aston Villa in the Premier League.
