Liverpool refuse to lose sight of exciting attacker added to shortlist of recent conqueror; two Prem rivals also mentioned

Mees Hilgers and Jeremy Doku

Jeremy Doku reportedly remains on Liverpool’s radar several years after rejecting the chance to join them – but the competition for his signature remains fierce.

Liverpool almost signed Doku back in 2017, when he was still a teenager. However, he eventually chose to continue building a career with Anderlecht instead. His efforts in Belgium then earned him a transfer to French side Rennes in 2020.

Doku’s name has appeared fairly frequently in gossip columns since. Liverpool have been linked with him throughout the formative years of his senior career.

Even though his output for Rennes has not been that impressive, Doku is still catching the eyes of a few big clubs. Now, rumours about Liverpool’s interest are coming to the surface again.

According to, Liverpool “have never stopped thinking about” the Belgium international. The Italian outlet predicts a return from the Reds in the transfer market for a player under contract with Rennes until 2025.

It is not exactly clear when the website expects Liverpool to act. Whenever the time comes, though, they will not have a clear path at signing him.

Indeed, fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal also get a mention in relation to Doku. They too must be taken into account.

But one rival who could be an increasing threat to Liverpool’s hopes of ever getting their hands on Doku would be Napoli.

After recently outperforming Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Champions League, the Serie A outfit want to keep progressing in the right direction. With that in mind, they will be alert to potential opportunities in the transfer market.

Napoli have had success in the Ligue 1 market before, bringing in Victor Osimhen from Lille with good consequences. Perhaps Doku could also be added to their attack in the near or distant future.

Also in Italy, Juventus started looking at Doku a couple of years ago. He shares the same agent as the Old Lady’s goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny.

The report does not provide many details of how much Doku might cost. But it is clear that he is of interest to several clubs still.

Jeremy Doku a talented prospect who needs to develop

For him to justify that interest, he might need to start scoring or assisting on a more frequent basis. From 62 appearances for Rennes so far, he has only managed four goals and six assists.

Of course, at his age, there is plenty of time ahead for him to develop into a more efficient player. He still has the raw traits that many coaches would find exciting to work with.

If he is to progress, though, he will have to pick his next step carefully. Would he be more accustomed to the Premier League or Serie A?

Either way, he would have to make some adaptations to his game. But he could bring something unpredictable to the table in either competition.

For now, clubs will have to keep monitoring how Doku develops in Ligue 1. He is also competing in the Europa League with Rennes this season. It is up to him to make the most of those opportunities to showcase his talents.
