Fabrizio Romano reveals how Championship ace can get Liverpool move, as recent rumours downplayed

Joao Pedro and Sander Berge

Fabrizio Romano has told Sheffield United star Sander Berge what he must do to achieve a Liverpool or Chelsea move, while also playing down rumours of a transfer in January.

On Saturday, French outlet Jeunes Footeux claimed Liverpool and Chelsea are considering a swoop for the midfielder in the winter transfer window. They have apparently been ‘attentive to his situation for several months’.

The link makes sense when you consider Liverpool and Chelsea’s respective midfield dilemmas. Several Liverpool midfielders have picked up injuries this season, while both Jordan Henderson and Thiago are the wrong side of 30.

At Chelsea, meanwhile, Blues chiefs are preparing for the departures of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante. They are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Despite these issues, it doesn’t look like Berge will be stepping up to the Premier League in January. During an interview with CaughtOffside, Romano has played down the links between the Norwegian and Liverpool and Chelsea.

Romano also told Berge what he must do to get that kind of switch in the future.

“At the moment it’s [a] quiet situation, nothing imminent or advanced with any big club,” the transfer expert said.

“He was on Liverpool’s list two years ago, now it’s gone quiet and priorities are different. I think he’s [a] very good player but [he] needs to be more consistent to get a top move.”

Sander Berge returns for Sheffield United

Berge enjoyed a great start to the season, registering three goals and three assists in 13 Championship outings. However, he was ruled out for two months with an ankle injury sustained in the 1-0 loss to QPR on October 4.

Berge’s recovery was helped by the World Cup break and he is almost back to full fitness now. The 24-year-old returned to action in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield, coming on for the final 25 minutes.

He looked out of sorts though, and will be hoping for a better impact when the Blades play Wigan a week today.

Liverpool and Chelsea may well be keeping tabs on Berge’s performances. But as Romano states, they simply have different priorities right now.

Liverpool’s ideal midfield signing is Jude Bellingham. And he apparently wants the transfer to Anfield, putting them ahead of Real Madrid in the race.

An alternative for the Reds is Argentina’s breakout World Cup star Enzo Fernandez. And reports in Portugal claim preliminary talks have already begun between Liverpool and his club, Benfica.

Over at Chelsea, they are looking to improve their defensive ranks with the capture of Josko Gvardiol. He has been one of the best players at this World Cup, helping Croatia to reach the semi-finals.

As he is an RB Leipzig player, there is a strong chance he will make a big move in the future. However, Leipzig could hold out for as much as £100m when selling the centre-half.

When it comes to Berge, Sheff Utd fans will be delighted to hear nothing is advanced about his possible exit. Keeping Berge for the full season will be a massive boost to their promotion hopes.

Where Sheff Utd finish in the Championship may well decide what happens to Berge. If they gain promotion, there will be little reason for him to leave.

But if Paul Heckingbottom’s side fail to go up, the midfielder will surely make a move to the top flight.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have discovered their chances of landing a Morocco World Cup player, according to Monday’s Transfer Gossip.
