Liverpool transfer news: Serge Gnabry talks held as Bayern fee tumbles amid Sadio Mane links
Liverpool have reportedly held transfer talks over Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry amid Sadio Mane’s links with the German champions.
After several seasons of guaranteed goalscoring form and security over their front line’s future, the Reds are facing an intriguing summer transfer window. Indeed, Mane and Mohamed Salah are entering the final year of their deals.
Not only that, but there is serious doubt as to whether either player will sign a new contract. And while Salah has said he is staying next season, Mane reportedly wants a new challenge – with Bayern circling.
As a result, Liverpool are putting feelers out over several potential replacements.
Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma feature on a six-man shortlist that the Anfield club have drawn up.
Gnabry also appears on that list and Anfield Central has provided an update on Liverpool’s links with the German.
The Reds reportedly held talks last month over the salary Gnabry would want if he moved to Anfield. The 26-year-old would demand £250,000 per week, which would make him the highest-paid player at the club.
However, Liverpool were willing to offer £200,000 per week, which is more in line with top earners Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara.
While Liverpool did not get as far as discussing a transfer fee for Gnabry, Bayern will supposedly have to accept a lower fee than hoped.
The Bundesliga winners value him at €80million (£68million). However, as he is entering the final year of his contract – like Mane and Salah – they will have to take between €35million (£30million) and €40million (£34million).
And Liverpool, who are aware of the effects a player being in the final year of their contract can have on their future – know that Bayern are ‘exposed’ over Gnabry.
Gnabry a long-term Liverpool target
The 31-time Germany international, who has scored 20 goals for his country, is reportedly a long-term Liverpool target. The Reds have been tracking him since he left Arsenal for Werder Bremen and then onto Bayern.
Bayern have tried to extend his contract, but have got nowhere after several attempts at negotiations. What’s more, the fact that Gnabry shares the same agent as Liverpool stars Mane and Naby Keita provides another twist.
As well as Liverpool, though, Arsenal and Tottenham are keen on Gnabry.
Above all, the winger wants to feel ‘valued’ at his next club if he does leave Bayern this summer.
Liverpool should step up move
Gnabry would prove a solid Liverpool signing as they look for a potential Mane replacement.
He has played over 100 games on the left and right wing, while also lining up as a striker and an attacking midfielder on occasion.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp likes attackers who can play fluidly across the front line without dropping in quality.
And Gnabry, who Arsenal let go of in 2016, has had to go the long way around to prove himself at the top level. His move to Bayern was not an immediate success as he went on loan to Hoffenheim.
Salah contract not sorted as Gnabry rumours fly around
Serge Gnabry has been hinted to leave Bayern Munich and Mo Salah contract situation continues to link him to Liverpool
However, after a solid 2018/19 season, his 23 goals and 14 assists in 2019/20 put him firmly on the map.
Indeed, he netted four goals against Tottenham in the Champions League, before scoring in the last 16 against Chelsea as well as the quarter-finals and semi-finals on the way to Bayern’s triumph.
As such, he would potentially relish a move back to the Premier League to try and prove himself as he enters his prime.
