Gerrard leads Aston Villa charge to take advantage of halved price tag for Liverpool outcast Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deep in thought

Steven Gerrard is plotting a move to take Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Liverpool to Aston Villa, according to a report.

Oxlade-Chamberlain looks likely to be sold by Liverpool this summer. He is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield. After only starting nine Premier League matches last season, it could be time to move on.

The attacking midfielder has never looked quite the same player since returning from the serious injury that ended his promising debut season at Anfield in 2017-18. A few other issues have hampered him.

Now, it may be time for Liverpool to cut their losses on a player who cost them £35m to sign from Arsenal.

He has already been linked with the likes of Newcastle and West Ham. A surprise move to rivals Manchester United has also been touted.

However, according to Football Insider, one other solution for Oxlade-Chamberlain would be to join Aston Villa.

Their report claims that Villa boss Gerrard is a major admirer of Oxlade-Chamberlain. In fact, he has installed the 28-year-old as a priority target.

Villa have started the summer transfer window productively. They have welcomed Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos to the club, while making loan deals for Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen permanent.

But Gerrard still has his eyes on further reinforcements. He will be hoping his relationship with Liverpool could give Villa the edge in the battle for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Promisingly for Villa, the 35-time former England international should not be too expensive. Indeed, Football Insider suggest Liverpool have halved the £22m asking price they were looking for last year.

Hence, Villa could be able to take Oxlade-Chamberlain for a fee in the region of £11m.

Football Insider confess that Villa face strong competition for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s services. But perhaps the presence of Gerrard in the dugout can give them an advantage.

Gerrard has different role in mind for Oxlade-Chamberlain but Villa move may suit

If they land him, Gerrard would reportedly plan to use the versatile star in an attacking role. Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored 17 goals from 133 appearances for Liverpool, plus 15 assists, but could make more of a contribution in a different position.

Maybe at a club like Villa, he would take on a bigger role in the team. Therefore, he could have more chances to up his output.

Yet he would still be competing with other creative players like Coutinho and Emi Buendia. Hence, Oxlade-Chamberlain would have to make the most of his chances still.

However, Villa seem to be the right level of club to satisfy his demands. They are not as big as Liverpool, but have pedigree and are aiming in an upwards direction.

It could be an ideal landing spot for a talented player looking to rebuild his career.
