Transfer Gossip: Liverpool face two major hurdles to sign Croatian tipped to fix midfield issues; Man Utd prioritise two stars for new contracts as nine deals run down

Liverpool will need to overcome two major hurdles to snap up a Rennes midfielder who has been dubbed the ‘next Luka Modric’, while Friday’s Transfer Gossip claims two Manchester United stars are closing in on new contracts after impressing so far this season.

KLOPP TIPPED TO MOVE FOR ‘NEXT MODRIC’

Liverpool are reportedly facing two hurdles if they decide to pursue their interest in Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer in 2023.

The Daily Express reported earlier in the summer that Majer, dubbed the ‘next Luka Modric’, was a viable option for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds have issues in their midfield this season, especially in the absence of the influential Thiago.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to dictate games from the middle of the park. Defensive issues have also played a part in their poor start to the new campaign.

While Harvey Elliott has been a clear standout for Liverpool, Jordan Henderson, Thiago and James Milner are all the wrong side of 30 – leaving Klopp almost certain to look for younger recruits to give new energy to his engine room.

And the Express claims that interest in 24-year-old Majer could come about, either in January or next summer.

However, two issues could hamper that interest in the form of the fee involved and Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are said to have a strong interest in the player and could move him if their financial issues are fixed.

Rennes are also demanding £52million for the playmaker, which Liverpool bosses could decide is too much.

Majer has scored a goal and added two assists for Rennes so far this season.

MAN UTD DUO ON BRINK OF NEW DEALS

Manchester United are reportedly hopeful of securing first-team stars Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot to new long-term contracts over the coming months.

The duo are among nine Red Devils players who will see their contracts run out in the summer of 2023. However, the club do have options to trigger one-year extensions on most of those deals.

Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, Luke Shaw and Fred are among the other big names with less than a year to run on their Old Trafford contracts.

But it’s Dalot and Rashford in particular who have impressed in United’s four-match winning run following their poor start to the new campaign under Erik ten Hag.

Rashford scored all three of his goals in wins over Liverpool and Arsenal and has looked more like his old self. The striker also has two assists playing in a central striker role instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

While United do have the option to trigger the extension in his deal. 90min claims the Red Devils feel it’s in their best interest to secure the England forward to a new long-term deal instead.

As for Dalot, the Portuguese is now categorically the club’s No.1 right-back.

The 23-year-old has beaten off competition from £50m man Aaron Wan-Bissaka to claim the job.

United were in the market for a new right-back in the summer. However, Ten Hag has been impressed with Dalot’s displays this season.

To that end, the club are ready to reward the player with a new contract.

EVERTON CLOSE TO SECURING GORDON

Contract talks between Everton and Anthony Gordon are reportedly “progressing well” as the 21-year-old forward, who was linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer, looks forward to a “substantial” pay increase.

The England Under-21 star’s current contract runs until 2025. However, the Toffees want to reward him for his performances and his response to transfer approaches in the summer.

Premier League rivals Chelsea chased Gordon over the final weeks of the summer window. But Gordon remained loyal to his boyhood club and Everton refused to buckle in order to keep their top star.

Gordon has scored twice in seven Premier League games for the club this season.
