Eddie Nketiah transfer latest: Liverpool enter the race for Arsenal star but face one big hurdle

Eddie Nketiah playing for Arsenal

Liverpool have joined the race to sign Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, who could leave the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer this summer.

The 22-year-old is set to fall out of contract and a host of Premier League clubs are keen. The Gunners are also battling to sign him to a new contract. However at this stage a move away looks more likely.

Arsenal are ready to offer Nketiah a big contract to stay. That could be down to the fact the striker has just hit a purple patch. He has bagged four goals in his last six Premier League games.

It has taken his tally for the season to nine. The problem for Nketiah has been a lack of starting opportunities. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has admitted recently he maybe should have played him more.

The interest is hot. West Ham, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Brighton have all been linked. And all four clubs could offer him the first-team football that he craves.

However Liverpool are also keen. According to a report in 90min, the Reds are “monitoring” the situation closely. They claim the same applies to Chelsea.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his attacking options. Indeed he is known to be interested in Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal. However at £38million it is a big outlay for the club. And Nketiah is far more attractive as a free agent.

The 90min report claims that both Liverpool and Chelsea see him as an “attractive squad option”. Maybe not the words that Nketiah wants to hear.

West Ham targeting pair from Arsenal

West Ham are targeting forward Eddie Nketiah and centre-half Konstantinos Mavropanos from Arsenal in a potential double summer swoop.

Nketiah could find himself in the same situation. Just at a different club. Swapping one bench for another is not part of the plan. That would make a move to the likes of West Ham more attractive.

He could even get more of a chance by staying with Arsenal. The Gunners need to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Alexandre Lacazette is set to leave. Meaning the door is open for Nketiah to stake a claim. Something he is doing right now with his run of goals.

Eddie Nketiah a good option for the Reds

Nketiah would have to decide whether a switch to Liverpool is a good one for him. If it is regular first-team football he is after then maybe it isn’t.

But it is easy to see why Liverpool are weighing up a move. Yes Klopp has Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota. But you never know what the future holds for a couple of those players. Landing Nketiah on a free would be a great bit of business.

And at the age of 22 he has plenty of time to improve further. He has shown he can score goals in the Premier League and that is a big box to tick. Klopp would just have to convince him to be a squad player. But being part of a squad challenging for all the top honours could make that bit easy.
