Liverpool transfer news: Reds to offer Naby Keita new contract in bid to fend off European heavyweight

Liverpool are reportedly planning to offer divisive midfielder Naby Keita a new contract in a bid to fend off interest from French giants PSG.

The 27-year-old’s current contract runs out at the end of next season but the report states that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants to keep him at Anfield, despite the midfielder hardly being a fan favourite.

The Guinea international joined Liverpool in a £50million deal in 2018, taking on Steven Gerrard’s iconic No.8 shirt in the process.

However, Keita has often found himself on the bench, particularly since the arrival of playmaker Thiago.

Klopp often prefers the middle trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago in the bigger games, as evidenced in Saturday’s Champions League final.

But despite that, The Athletic claims that Liverpool want Keita to commit to a new deal.

The Reds are looking to act after Foot Mercato suggested that PSG are keen on the midfielder. The report states that the Paris outfit want Keita to replace former Liverpool man Gini Wijnaldum.

The Netherlands star is out of favour after failing to deliver for the Ligue 1 champions since signing last summer.

PSG wanted Keita talks in Paris

It’s claimed that members of PSG’s hierarchy were hoping to speak to Keita while he was in Paris on Saturday. However, they were unable to get access to the player.

Keita is not the only Liverpool who could potentially move on this summer.

Rumours persist that Sadio Mane is Bayern Munich bound in the search for a fresh challenge. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also expected to move on after finding first-team starts tough to come by.

The 28-year-old did not a single appearance for the club in the final two months of the campaign. And with his contract expiring at the end of next season, the Reds could accept a discounted fee.

Keita a divisive Anfield figure

Many Liverpool fans are unlikely to be too unhappy about Keita being linked with a potential exit.

The former RB Leipzig star was much touted when he joined the Reds in 2018 for £48million. Indeed, there was a feeling that he was the final piece of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield jigsaw.

However, his often erratic performances have left Anfield fans scratching their heads. None more so than in the Champions League final, when he squandered a couple of decent shooting opportunities late on to draw Liverpool level.

Despite having a strong scoring record in Austria and then Germany, Keita has scored just 11 goals in 116 Reds appearances.

Liverpool would certainly have been hoping for much more than that. And, to that end, it comes as somewhat of a surprise that they are looking to extend his stay further.
