Liverpool transfers: Jorg Schmadtke ‘lunges’ in to sign talented Dane as Klopp greenlights Italian raid

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly backed Jorg Schmadtke in his plan to bring a talented Denmark defender to Anfield, with Reds looking to the future.

The Merseysiders brought in the German as their new sporting director, albeit in an initial short-term basis. But that position will come under review by both parties once the summer window is over and should Liverpool be keen to extend.

The 59-year-old’s duties at Anfield will primarily focus on bolstering a midfield that has already been shorn of four players this summer. Indeed, with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving as free agents, it is easy to forget that Juventus loanee Arthur Melo has also been sent back to where he came.

As such, Klopp wants to bring in at least three new midfield options this summer. And while Alexis Mac Allister ticks that first box off, Liverpool links to four other targets appears to have taken a drastic downturn.

However, Liverpool – as shown in previous windows – do like to bring in some of the best emerging young talent. That has been the case in recent windows with the likes of Sepp van den Berg, Calvin Ramsay, Kaide Gordon and – perhaps most successfully – Harvey Elliott all signing for modest fees.

Now Klopp has backed Schmadtke in a plan to raid Lecce for talented Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu.

The 18-year-old joined the Serie A side last summer, moving from FC Nordsjaelland in his native Denmark.

And while he is yet to debut for their senior squad, he made 38 appearances for their second string, Lecce Primavera.

As a result of his fine performances, Lecce moved to recently hand him a new deal to summer 2027.

Liverpool ready to snatch Patrick Dorgu

However, his time in Italy looks likely to end after just 12 months, per reports in the Italian media.

Indeed, according to Calciomercato, Dorgu has been watched by Liverpool scouts on several occasions in recent months. And they claim the Merseysiders are ready to ‘lunge in’ for the left-back after doing his due dilligence on the teenager.

The Reds will reportedly have no issues striking a compensation package with Lecce for his signing. And it seems the move to Anfield has now been given the green light.

The Reds have some solid options in the left-back department. Indeed, Konstantinos Tsimikas provides solid cover for regular Andrew Robertson.

But with the latter now 29 and his game very much reliant on pace and fitness, Liverpool are doing themselves no harm at all by looking to the future.

Should the move go through, he will likely start out in their youth sides with an eye on future first-team involvement.

Dorgu, who holds equal Danish and Nigerian citizenship, has been capped by Denmark U19s and is rated as one of the country’s brightest prospects.
