Liverpool ‘undoubtedly’ attentive to winger they can snap up for €20m after Arsenal link, with January move virtually certain

Patrik Walemark marking Gustav Isaksen

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Danish winger Gustav Isaksen, who has also been linked with Arsenal, according to reports.

Isaksen plays for Midtjylland in his native country and has earned international caps at under-21 level. Recently, a report suggested he was becoming a target for Arsenal. The current Premier League leaders might consider strengthening out wide in January.

To get Isaksen, they would have to overtake AC Milan and Fiorentina in the transfer race, as well as fending off Newcastle and West Ham. Now, it is becoming clear that the competition will be much more widespread.

According to Ekstra Bladet, Liverpool are now in contention to sign Isaksen. In fact, their scouts have seen him in action as recently as Monday, when Midtjylland drew 0-0 with Nordsjaelland.

Although Isaksen was unable to score in that game, he has already managed seven goals and three assists from 25 appearances in all competitions this season.

As a result of his rise, Midtjylland are already expecting to lose him in January. Indeed, their director of football has said Isaksen will be on the move in the winter.

For that to happen, though, they are seeking a transfer fee which would be above €20million, or £17.4million.

And along with Liverpool, the likes of Ajax, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica are also said to be keeping tabs on the 21-year-old.

Hence, Isaksen must be a top talent, who could get the chance to come to one of Europe’s top five leagues within a matter of weeks.

It remains to be seen what plans any of his suitors would have for him after his arrival. He might not yet be ready for a regular first-team role, but could contribute as a depth player.

Isaksen might have to be patient but has plenty of admirers

His next takers might even want to loan him out so he can enhance his experience elsewhere. Although we will have to wait and see if that would be the case.

Liverpool already have plenty of attacking options. Isaksen favours playing on the right-hand side, which just so happens to be the position Mohamed Salah occupies at Anfield.

The likes of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are also capable of playing in the attacking roles behind the main striker, which should usually be Darwin Nunez.

Hence, Isaksen would have his work cut out for him to compete for his place in Jurgen Klopp’s selection. But as a club, Liverpool have been willing to invest for the future, as with Elliott and Carvalho.

Therefore, they may have some plans for the Midtjylland number 11, whose contract is due to expire in 2024.

In total, Isaksen has already featured in 116 matches for Midtjylland. During his time with their first team, he has scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists.

He won the Danish Superliga in his debut season as a professional. Since then, he has amassed experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.

His pedigree looks promising. But he would have to raise his standards even further if he was to come to the Premier League, Serie A, Eredisivie, Bundesliga or Primeira Liga.

It seems like Isaksen is someone we might be hearing more about in the near future.
