Man City boost as Euro giants rule themselves out of race for quality midfield signing

Manchester City have been given a boost in their hopes of capturing Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

According to various reports, Pep Guardiola is plotting a raid on his former club to land the 24-year-old. Guardiola believes his midfield can be improved, despite it being one of the best in Europe.

de Jong would not be a cheap addition as Barcelona paid Ajax £65million for his signature three years ago.

However, City have proved time and time again that they are willing to go big for some of the best talent in the world.

de Jong’s obvious ability has put him on the radar of other top clubs. Chelsea could take him to Stamford Bridge, should they offload disappointing loan signing Saul Niguez.

German titans Bayern Munich have also been monitoring the playmaker’s situation, as per the Daily Mail, who cite reports in Spain.

However, Bayern President Herbert Hainer does not believe they need to make a move for de Jong in the January transfer window.

He told Sky Sports Germany (via transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano): “We have a very, very strong team – and I don’t see any reason why we should still do something in winter.”

Hainer makes a good point. Bayern are top of the Bundesliga after winning 16 of their 20 matches so far this campaign. They have a six-point lead on Borussia Dortmund, their closest competitors.

Plus, the Bavarians are favourites to make it into the Champions League quarter-finals after being drawn against Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg in the round of 16.

Hainer’s comments are good news for Guardiola and City. They could end up having a free shot at de Jong, who has made 16 La Liga appearances for Barca this term.

Guardiola reacts to Man City draw

City’s most recent outing culminated in a 1-1 draw with Southampton at St Mary’s.

The Premier League leaders went behind early on as Kyle Walker-Peters beat Ederson with a great finish.

City were level by the 65th minute thanks to Aymeric Laporte, who found space in the box before heading home a Kevin de Bruyne free-kick.

Guardiola said after the match: “We played really well. Unfortunately, in the first half we conceded a goal. But I think this was one of our best performances of the season, by far.

“They were incredibly organised and this is one of the best performances we played against them. Yes, the result was not good, but in terms of performance and the way we played, it was excellent.

“We played better than in the Arsenal game, when we won, and today we drew. Sometimes you deserve it and you don’t win. But the way we played here was excellent.”
