Chelsea ace overlooked as Real Madrid prepare €60m bid for Man City star who’s played his last game for Guardiola
Real Madrid have switched their focus from a Chelsea ace to a Man City star, and a mooted €60m bid could be enough to sign a player who may never play for Pep Guardiola again, per reports.
Los Blancos are understood to be in the market for a new full-back this summer. Questions are being raised as to whether left-back Ferland Mendy will remain at the club with injury issues becoming increasingly common. The ultra-versatile Eduardo Camavinga has been forced to deputise in defence as a result.
On the opposite flank, Dani Carvajal’s best days are seemingly behind him. The 31-year-old has been a fine servant at the Bernabeu, though Real are beginning to look to the future.
To that end, multiple reports out of Spain have put Real in the mix for a blockbuster Reece James raid.
The Chelsea ace tops a four-man shortlist of right-backs Real have identified as successors to Carvajal. However, even a mooted bid of around £90m might not be enough to make Chelsea sing.
Chelsea have no desire to cash in on a homegrown player who is already among the world’s best in his position. As such, Real may be forced into exploring options two, three and four on their list.
Per AS, that’ll bring Joao Cancelo (Man City), Juan Foyth (Villarreal) and Davide Calabria (AC Milan) into play. Today’s update concerns Man City’s Cancelo.
The Portuguese is currently out on loan at Bayern Munich, though the Bavarians are highly unlikely to activate their option to buy. The option is set at a hefty €70m.
Cancelo was unceremoniously dumped by City in the winter window after reportedly falling out with Guardiola over no longer being a regular starter.
Trusted reporter Ben Jacobs later told TEAMtalk in an exclusive “there’s a very strong possibility that he doesn’t play another game for Man City”.
Guardiola is enjoying great success with his new 3-2-4-1 formation. The system utilises three centre-halves along with a fourth centre-back in John Stones operating alongside Rodri as a second pivot.
As such, there is no place for traditional full-backs like Cancelo in Guardiola’s strongest eleven and his rift with the Spaniard is likely to result in his sale this summer.
Now, a fresh report out of Spain (via Goal), has revealed Real could hand Cancelo an escape route to Madrid.
With a Reece James deal looking unlikely, Real have reportedly ‘set their sights’ on Cancelo.
A €60m (approx. £52.9m) bid is speculated – a sum City may be more than happy to receive for an unwanted player who’ll turn 29 in May.
Adding to Real’s interest is the fact Cancelo can play at both left-back or right-back.
