Man City can snare Euro giant’s star for £48million as they’re backed into corner

Alessandro Bastoni, Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan, April 2023

Manchester City will be able to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni for around £48million, as financial difficulties could force them into a sale.

City’s defence is one of the best in Europe. In the Premier League this season, the Etihad outfit have conceded just 27 times – less than a goal a game.

Last season, they conceded just 26 league goals in the entire campaign. The wealth of options they have at the back is something to behold.

When Kyle Walker isn’t playing consistently, you know there are some quality options. The likes of John Stones and Ruben Dias are some of the best in Europe.

Alongside them are players such as Nathan Ake, Rico Lewis and Aymeric Laporte. The latter was a mainstay of the side last season, playing 44 times in all competitions.

This term, though, Laporte has played just 16 times. As a result of his dwindling role, it’s been suggested it’s ‘likely’ he’ll move on at the end of the campaign.

While there are a number of options in the heart of the defence, Pep Guardiola will want to fill that gap.

Reports of Laporte’s exit have coincided with interest in Bastoni. Indeed, the City boss is reportedly trying to convince the Inter defender into joining.

City can get Bastoni for £48million

It might not take a whole lot of convincing. Inter might be forced to sell their centre-back anyway, as per a report from Inter Live.

It suggests the Serie A side’s potential failure to reach next season’s Champions League would mean ‘tens of millions of revenues’ would be lost.

Inter are currently fifth in Serie A – outside the spots that qualify for the competition. As such, the they would need to recoup €60million (approx £52.9million) ‘to balance the budget deficit’.

The sale of Bastoni seems to be one of the easiest ways to raise that sort of money. He’s named alongside Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella as players who could be sold.

However, the interest of City and also Manchester United in Bastoni is named. The report also suggests €55million (approx £48million) would be enough to land him in the summer, even if he pens a new contract.

City bid for Bastoni is a no-brainer

It sounds as if there will be little push back from Inter on a bid for Bastoni if they’re not in the Champions League.

As such, City should make that bid. The defender would be a fantastic addition to an already very solid defence at the Etihad.

You need only to look at the Champions League run to see his impact. Inter have kept clean sheets in five European games this season – all but one of which he’s completed a full 90 minutes in.

He’s also chipped in with three assists on the Champions League run – which should see Inter into the semi-finals – highlighting his impact on both sides of the ball.

What’s more, he’s 24, so he’ll be a top player for years to come, and if City are going to lose a defender this summer, gaining one who will be a top asset for the next few years seems a great move.
