‘We saw it’ – Club president confirms Man City interest in 18-goal striker

Yuri Alberto Internacional

Internacional president Alessandro Barcellos has confirmed that Man City are hoping to land Brazilian striker Yuri Alberto.

The starlet has notched 29 goals in the last two seasons, including 18 during 2020-21. He has featured for Brazil’s U23 side on two occasions and could be called up to the senior squad if he achieves a big-money move.

Arsenal became potential suitors in June as part of their hunt for Alexandre Lacazette’s replacement. Man City soon began to rival them for Alberto’s services, as did Italian giants AC Milan.

It is now between City and Milan as the Gunners are focusing on alternative targets. Reports suggest that Pep Guardiola wants the 20-year-old to lead his forward line ahead of next season.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Barcellos spoke about the transfer rumours surrounding Alberto. “We heard about it. Of course, nothing concrete has arrived for the club. But we saw it,” he said (via Sport Witness).

“Others have, at some point, concretely approached the club, but we are also making this effort so that we can keep Yuri Alberto.”

The centre-forward’s contract runs until June 2025, so Internacional are in no rush to sell. His release clause stands at a surprisingly large €80m (£58m). However, it is thought that the player could move on if a £17m bid emerges.

Manchester City will reportedly be rivalled for RB Leipzig midfielder Christopher Nkunku by Chelsea and Newcastle, with more updates on Timo Werner and Jesse Lingard.

Alberto is not the only player under consideration at the Etihad. Their number one target in attack is Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

He looks set to leave Germany in the summer when his £68m release clause activates. It is far from a straightforward deal though as Chelsea, Man Utd, PSG and Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the goalscorer.

His next club would also have to deal with agent Mino Raiola. The representative will receive a huge fee when Haaland decides to leave Dortmund for a new challenge.

Foden: City ‘dominated’ Man Utd in derby

Meanwhile, Phil Foden has reacted after the Citizens eased past rivals Man Utd 2-0 on Saturday.

Guardiola’s men benefitted from an Eric Bailly own goal early on. Bernardo Silva then connected with a Joao Cancelo cross to give them a two-goal cushion.

“We had the game of our lives today,” Foden told Sky Sports. “Everything went right, a lot of possession and chances. We dominated from start to finish.”

Asked what his side did best, the England international added: “Possession, picking the right times and when to hurt them. Really pleased.

“We knew we could exploit the space in behind and we picked the right times to do it. My team-mates found me a few times in behind and on another day I could have finished the chances.”
