Haaland has Man City as only ‘third option’ behind European pair – report

Erling Haaland shouts during Ajax vs Borussia Dortmund, October 2021

Erling Haaland has Manchester City positioned as his third option behind a pair of European giants, a report has claimed.

Haaland is currently assessing his next move for 2022 and there are a lot of choices on the table. The options are slowly being eliminated, though. For example, Chelsea dropped out in the summer after signing Romelu Lukaku.

And now Barcelona are virtually out of the hunt, too, after the sacking of Ronald Koeman has opened up a ‘great crisis’ at the Nou Camp.

That’s according to a report by AS, who have provided the latest update on one of the biggest transfer sagas football has ever seen.

They claim that with the Catalan giants out of the picture, top two contenders have emerged. This will see a ‘tough battle’ between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Of those two, Haaland is said to prefer Real. However, PSG will fight tooth and nail if the Spanish side take Kylian Mbappe from them.

And that then leaves City third in the pecking order, putting a dent in their hopes of signing the megastar 21-year-old.

The reigning Premier League champs have already been exploring alternatives. One man they like the look of is Fiorentina bagsman Dusan Vlahovic.

Manchester City eyeing up move for Toni Kroos

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing up a move for Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, with more news on Donny van de Beek and Ferran Torres.

And in better news for Pep Guardiola, the Serie A club’s director Joe Barone was unable to rule out Vlahovic moving on with his contract up in 2023.

He said: “Vlahovic is part of the team. He took a decision and we are preparing for the future, not just in terms of singles, but also in terms of the group.”

They’ve also been heavily linked to Yuri Alberto of Brazilian side Internacional. However, they have reportedly fallen behind in that race as well.

City walked away from Lukaku

Meanwhile, Lukaku’s agent has revealed City tried to sign his client before Chelsea did.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Federico Pastorello said: “I think I can say without disappointing anybody that Manchester City came in the year before.

“During the pandemic, it was very complicated because of trying to fly to places to meet people. It started very concrete and very serious, but eventually they changed their idea or they were not ready to make it happen.

“Honestly, it was very difficult after the first year – it was almost impossible. He [Lukaku] hadn’t won the league with Inter and he wanted to do that, and it would have been really impossible. Then they [City] focussed on Harry Kane this summer.”
