Guardiola confirms Ruben Dias absence timeframe that could have implications on title decider

Ruben Dias captaining Manchester City

Ruben Dias is expected to be absent for Manchester City in what could be a title decider against Liverpool next week – but Pep Guardiola isn’t thinking that far ahead yet.

Guardiola confirmed the news while speaking at a press conference to preview City’s return from the international break against Burnley. That game occupies his full focus for now, but it is easy to look ahead to the repercussions of the Ruben Dias news.

The centre-back last played for City on March 1st, in an FA Cup win over Peterborough. A vital member of their system, they have still managed two 4-1 wins and two goalless draws without him.

But Dias’ absence will extend for another couple of weeks, Guardiola has confirmed. It means he is likely to miss their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid and crucial Premier League match against Liverpool.

Guardiola confirmed: “I don’t know, the doctor said four to six weeks.

“I think it’s four now, (from) March 1, now it’s April 1. I think we need 10 days or two weeks more but everything is going well.”

Manchester City are only one point above Liverpool in the Premier League table at present. Thus, next Sunday’s meeting at the Etihad Stadium could be crucial in determining who is most likely to win the league.

Guardiola, though, wants to focus on the more imminent challenge from relegation-threatened Burnley.

For that game, Cole Palmer will be another absentee, but John Stones looks likely to be able to feature despite withdrawing early from England duty during the international break.

The Burnley battle will kick off a tough schedule for City, who have games in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup to contend with in April.

Guardiola is preparing for the challenge and is ready to stick with what he hopes will be a winning formula.

Guardiola ready for Burnley clash

Despite Burnley appearing to be one of the lower-calibre opponents on their schedule, Guardiola expects this to be a challenge too.

He said: “We have a lot of games, eight or potentially nine games in this month and for every one we’ll select the best team to win the games.

“It’s not the first time we’ve faced it and will do again. It means what we’ve done so far we’ve done incredibly well. It’s because we are in all competitions.

“Now it is game by game. The first is Burnley, who are always a tough opponent, especially away.

“I have incredible respect for Sean Dyche. For many years their consistency, the ideas and the way they play shows he is a good football manager.

“It does not depend on results going good or bad. He believes what they are doing and it works.

“I know at the end of the season, going to Burnley away is very difficult for many opponents.”
