Pep Guardiola will be angry upon finding out that influential Manchester City star Bernardo Silva is still hoping to join Barcelona, despite having signed a new contract at the Etihad recently.

Silva was heavily linked with a move away from City in the recent summer transfer window. One of Kylian Mbappe’s demands for staying at Paris Saint-Germain was that the club did all they could to reunite him with Silva, while Xavi was desperate to take the attacking midfielder to Barca.

In early August, it was claimed that Silva was ‘desperate’ to leave City in order to take part in a new challenge.

However, last season’s treble winners ultimately got their way as they managed to finalise a new contract with Silva. He extended his deal from 2025 to 2026 on August 24.

When the contract was announced, the Portugal international said his spell at City had been ‘incredible’ so far and that he wants to ‘keep on winning’ in England and beyond.

City will have been expecting the transfer rumours to disappear now Silva’s future appears to be resolved. However, it does not look like that will be the case.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Silva is still ‘thinking’ of a move to Barca in a future transfer window.

It is very unlikely he will push to leave Guardiola’s side partway through the current season, but a transfer in summer 2024 cannot be ruled out.

Bernardo Silva can be signed for £50m, claims report

The report even claims there is a release clause in Silva’s new City deal, which tells Barca exactly how much they need to pay to take the 29-year-old to Spain. That release clause supposedly sits at £50m. That is despite City previously valuing their player at as much as £80m.

Guardiola will be fuming if Silva is truly intent on signing for Barca. This would mean he is not completely focused on succeeding with City, something Guardiola demands from all his players.

Interestingly, Silva is not the only player the Spanish media claim is holding out for Barca. Mundo Deportivo add that RB Leipzig attacker Dani Olmo is also aiming to play for Xavi’s team at some point in the future.

Olmo was linked with a move to City in the summer, but he went on to extend his contract with Leipzig until 2027.

However, that fresh deal includes a release clause worth €60m (£51.5m). Therefore, if Barca want to improve their squad with the signings of both Silva and Olmo, then they will have to spend £101.5m in total.

Meanwhile, City were allowed to benefit after a senior Chelsea player prevented the West London outfit from signing a top star.
