Man City contract rush continues as star begins preliminary talks; two clubs watching on

Ilkay Gundogan Man City

Ilkay Gundogan could be the latest Manchester City player to sign a new contract after the club reportedly opened initial dialogue over an extension.

City have been making moves to tie down some of their most influential stars recently. On Tuesday, attacking full-back Joao Cancelo agreed fresh terms which will keep him at the Etihad until 2027.

The following day, reports revealed City’s ‘confidence’ in sorting out the long-term future of Bernardo Silva, too. He had been in line for a transfer last summer but is now a key player under Pep Guardiola.

Silva, along with his agent Jorge Mendes, has held ‘positive’ talks with club officials about a new deal, as per The Times. Barcelona hold an interest in the attacking midfielder but look set to be frustrated in their transfer hunt.

The Premier League leaders have also finalised a new contract with in-demand youngster James McAtee in recent days.

Sources in Spain now claim City are preparing to enter negotiations with Gundogan to keep him in Manchester for potentially the rest of his career. The 31-year-old’s current contract runs until 2023.

As stated earlier, preliminary talks have held, and they could result in serious discussions over the coming weeks.

Gundogan earns around £140,000 per week, according to Spotrac, which is far below team-mates Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

As such, the Citizens could reward Gundogan’s huge influence on the team by pushing him towards the £200,000-a-week mark.

A separate report from Sports Illustrated details interest in the 54-cap Germany international. They state teams from Spain and Germany are keeping tabs on his situation. Even rival Premier League clubs are seemingly ready to swoop in, should Gundogan become a free agent next summer.

The Spanish outlets, meanwhile, reveal Barcelona and Bayern Munich as the specific clubs watching his situation closely.

Gundogan had a great campaign in 2020-21, hitting 13 league goals as Guardiola’s men stormed to the Prem title.

He has not been in such a rich vein of form this time around, although Guardiola values his intense work rate and all-round play highly.

Guardiola ‘really pleased’ with new City signing

Meanwhile, the Spanish manager has been speaking about £14million signing Julian Alvarez.

The Argentine striker officially became a City player in January but will spend the rest of the season back on loan at River Plate.

“Congratulations for City. They work to be in the present but of course for the future,” Guardiola told reporters.

“It’s a player that could be already with us now but we have enough players, I don’t like to have too many players in several positions.

“The best is stay in River Plate, he’s done incredibly well. In the next pre-season he’ll be with us, after we’ll decide what happens, every season the squad moves.

“I am personally really pleased to have this talented young player for the next years.”
