Man City title hero Ilkay Gundogan linked with Bayern Munich switch as key request comes to light

Ilkay Gundogan captaining Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could end up leaving the Etihad this summer as a report claims he is a target for Bayern Munich.

The Germany international made 43 appearances for Manchester City this season, registering 10 goals and six assists. The most important of those goals came on the final day of the Premier League.

He bagged a brace in the final 15 minutes against Aston Villa, helping Pep Guardiola’s side snatch a 3-2 victory and make the title theirs.

Manchester City have now won four Premier League crowns in five years, amid intense pressure from Liverpool.

While Gundogan has been a loyal servant and won them the latest piece of silverware, that match could be his last for the club.

Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed City are in talks with the 31-year-old over a contract renewal. This is because his current terms expire next year.

But according to German outlet TZ, Gundogan has actually been told that an extension is ‘unlikely’.

As a result, he is quietly searching for a new team to continue his exceptional career with.

Ilkay Gundogan request puts future in doubt

The report claims Gundogan is ‘not averse’ to a change of scenery. That’s because he is requesting to start every important match, which Guardiola cannot guarantee at City.

The Spanish coach also has the likes of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden available to him – making competition for places fierce.

Romano states numerous German teams are monitoring developments ahead of potential bids for Gundogan.

TZ now reveal one of those clubs to be Bayern, as they have the necessary funds to land him and pay for his wages.

He takes home around £140,000 per week in Manchester. Bayern’s top earner is Robert Lewandowski on £329,000 a week – meaning the transfer is possible in terms of finances.

Gundogan must now decide where he wants to be next season. City will be favourites for another Prem title and can also rely on Erling Haaland up front. This gives them even more firepower in the search for UCL glory and could convince Gundogan to stay.

But he must also consider Bayern, as they are dominating German football at the moment. Plus, they are going through an exciting period of change under young boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Of course, one factor that must be mentioned is Gundogan’s history with Dortmund. He played under Jurgen Klopp at BVB, helping them to win a Bundesliga title and German cup.

Were the midfielder to end up at the Allianz Arena, then this would tarnish his relationship with Dortmund fans.

Meanwhile, Simon Jordan has criticised City star Jack Grealish for how he acted during the club’s title celebrations.
