Manchester City are expected to finalise the signing of Kalvin Phillips on Friday with the England midfielder due to undergo a medical at the club’s Etihah Campus.

The 26-year-old’s future has been under the spotlight for most of the 2021/22 season. And with his deal having just two years left to run, City made their move to sign him earlier this month. As such, news broke last Friday that they have agreed a fee with Leeds for his services.

City are paying Leeds an initial £45m for the 26-year-old, with add-ons taking the deal to £50m. A deal, worth around £5m, to take 18-year-old Darko Gyabi to Elland Road will be negotiated separately between the clubs.

A major talent of their U23s side, Leeds were adamant that any deal for Phillips had to allow them the chance to sign the London-born star.

Of Ghananain ancestory, the player has everything in his locker to become a successful, modern-day midfielder. To that end, Leeds may be landing themselves a bargain.

And Leeds were keen to ensure they were given permission to sign the hugely-talented teenager as part of the arrangement.

The deal to take Phillips to City will end his 12-year association with Leeds United. Coming up through their academy, Phillips has made a 234 appearances in his eight seasons in their first-team squad.

However, it was only upon the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa that Phillips truly found himself. Previously operating as an attacking midfielder to limited affect, Bielsa turned Phillips into a holding midfielder of real aplomb.

His progress helped Leeds earn promotion at the second time of asking under Bielsa. And it was while still a Championship player that Phillips earned the first of his 23 England caps.

City transfer is one that Kalvin Phillips could not resist

Phillips, though, will have had his ear bent by England teammates and their luxurous lifestyles and salaries while in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Indeed, his reported £38,000 a week Leeds wages will have been dwarved by all his Three Lions peers.

As such, it’s little surprise to see him ultimately moving to the Etihad.

He will get the chance to further his game under the excellent tutelage of Pep Guardiola. Furthermore, he will also get a solid chance to win trophies at City. Unfortunately, that is something that appeared unlikely any time soon at Leeds.

TEAMtalk understands Kalvin Phillips will sign a four-year deal at the Etihad, keeping him at Manchester City until 2026. His wages will be worth a reported £85,000 a week.

And assuming his medical goes through without any issues, Phillips will be paraded as City’s second marquee signing of the summer after Erling Haaland.

Meanwhile, reports claim Leeds also asked Manchester City about a possible deal for James McAtee as part of their negotiations over Phillips.
