Marc Cucurella is being linked with a £30m move to Manchester City after a brilliant first season for the left-back in the Premier League.
Despite announcing the signing of Erling Haaland for the upcoming season, Man City are being linked with yet another sought-after player. Wing-back Cucurella has exceeded expectations since joining Brighton from Getafe last summer.
And according to a report from The Telegraph, City are closely monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation.
The wing-back has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the campaign and has cemented himself in Graham Potters’ team.
The report states that Cucurella has ‘hugely impressed Guardiola’. The City manager knows of the left-back from his connections at Barcelona.
A price of around £30m has been hinted at in the report which, for a player of Cucurella’s quality, seems low.
It is also thought that Brighton know they will lose the left-back sooner rather than later. They do, however, want to keep him for at least one more season.
Since Dan Burn left the club for pastures new, the 23-year-old has been rotating with Solly March within the position.
Cucurella has outperformed March when called upon and has been one of their main attacking threats over the last season.
Why City want Cucurella
One area of the pitch that Guardiola’s team is seemingly lacking in depth is left-back.
With Benjamin Mendy unavailable, Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been the common two covering that position.
When used, the pair have played well. It it reported, however, that Guardiola has his eyes set on a player who is more ‘natural’ at left wing-back.
Nathan Ake has also been known to deputise at left-back but, again, it is not his preferred position.
Cucurella would fit Man City’s style of play as he is very attacking-minded and often creates chances from nothing.
The defender has contributed to three goals throughout the campaign, comprising of one goal and two assists.
The report does, however, note that the move may not come to fruition in the upcoming transfer window.
This is, despite Cucurella fitting the exact profile Guardiola wants to build his team around. If a deal does go through this summer, however, it would be a solid acquisition for the Cityzens.
