Manchester City tempt Brighton into Marc Cucurella transfer with interesting swap offer

Marc Cucurella, Brighton, May 2022.

Marc Cucurella could be in line for a move to Manchester City, with the big hitters set to offer Brighton a swap deal to secure his services.

Cucurella has been a revelation since his move from Getafe to Brighton last summer. The full-back slotted into the Seagulls side with ease.

Cucurella played every single Premier League game he was available for. Furthermore, he failed to complete 90 minutes on just three occasions.

His versatility stood him in good stead during the season. He was utilised as a left-back, centre-back, and on the left side of the midfield, and did not look out of place in any position.

The Spaniard was named both Brighton’s player of the season and players’ player of the season.

Naturally, after such a good season, and easy transition to playing in England, Cucurella has gained some attention. Premier League champions Manchester City have been linked with a move for the full-back.

A fee in the region of £30million has previously been mentioned for the 23-year-old to move on.

However, The Sun claims that City could offer Brighton a swap deal for the services of Cucurella.

That report references James McAtee as a potential makeweight in the transfer. Brighton have reportedly shown an interest in the youngster previously.

However, it is likely that they would want to make a profit on the £16.2million they spent on Cucurella last summer.

Cucurella a good prospect for City

Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella

Cucurella would be a good prospect for the City side. The left-back position has been filled by one of Oleksandr Zinchenko – a fringe player – or Joao Cancelo – a natural right-back – this season.

Adding Cucurella into the mix would mean playing a natural left-back there, and one who clearly has bags of talent. He is just 23-years-old, so could have a long career at one of England’s biggest clubs.

City could benefit from the transfer in more ways than that, too. Kyle Walker is the wrong side of 30, and while he has performed consistently in a City shirt, that will not carry on forever.

Cancelo could shift back to his natural position at right-back soon, with Cucurella playing on the left. Both players have shown their qualities at both ends of the pitch, so City would remain in safe hands in attack and defence when Walker does move on.

As such, it seems a great piece of business for the Citizens, should they manage to pull it off.
