Manchester City could pull the plug on a deal to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton following reports the Seagulls are looking for a £50million transfer fee.
City have put a new left-back high on their wanted list and Cucurella is a top target. Indeed Fabrizio Romano suggested that City would make their move for Cucurella this week. However it would appear the transfer may have hit an early stumbling block, the transfer fee.
The 23-year-old has been a revelation since arriving at Brighton in August of last year. He played in every Premier League game and caught the eye with his performances. City are keen and it is thought that Brighton would be willing to sell if the price was right.
Reports claim that figure stands at a bumper £50million. That would mean a substantial profit on the £15.4million they paid to Getafe less than 12 months ago.
City’s interest could end right there as they turn their attention to other targets. Despite their riches City will not pay over the odds for a player and will have their own valuation.
Brighton are unlikely to budge either. Cucurella is under contract and Brighton have cash after just selling Yves Bissouma to Tottenham.
The Seagulls also stood firm with their £50million valuation of Ben White last year before he eventually joined Arsenal.
Pep wants Marc Cucarella and first bid is ready
Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Marc Cucarella and Manchester are ready to make their first bid for the Brighton left back
There are also reports suggesting that Chelsea are in the hunt for Cucurella. Whether they would be willing to match Brighton’s valuation remains to be seen.
Manchester City have decision to make
City boss Pep Guardiola knows Cucurella well from his time at Barcelona. The player came through their La Masia Academy before eventually joining Getafe.
The defender has made great progress but City now just have to decide whether he is worth a £50million outlay. Cucurella is versatile and can play as a standard left-back or left wing-back. He also made nine appearances as a central defender for Brighton last season.
It is that kind of versatility that could tempt City to edge closer to the asking price. With Oleksandr Zinchenko also heading for the exit door a replacement will be needed.
Indeed it has been suggested that the imminent arrival of Cucurella is another reason City are allowing Zinchenko to leave. Everton have now emerged as a major player to sign the Ukrainian.
Cucurella did prove he has what it takes to shine in the Premier League last season. That is also a big plus point and City will soon have a decision to make.
