Pep explains how one Man City star will improve after Carabao Cup defeat

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has explained how Phil Foden will improve after he missed a penalty in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham.

City have dominated the competition since 2017, lifting the trophy in each of the last four seasons. But it was not to be this time round as David Moyes’ side were victorious at the London Stadium.

It ended 0-0 after normal time thanks to a couple of top saves from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Then the Frenchman had to turn his attention penalties.

Mark Noble put the Irons ahead by confidently dispatching of his spot-kick. Phil Foden then dragged his effort wide, giving West Ham the advantage.

Everyone else converted and it was then down to Said Benrahma to secure the home win. He beat Zack Steffen from 12 yards to send Moyes’ men into the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

After the defeat, Guardiola said: “It’s been an incredible run so we finished in a good way in terms of performance, we played a really good game and created a lot of chances against a team who defend very deep.

“On penalties they were better, congratulations to West Ham and we’ll be back next year.”

Manchester City eyeing up move for Toni Kroos

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing up a move for Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, with more news on Donny van de Beek and Ferran Torres.

The Spaniard then revealed how Foden would learn from his disappointment. “Unfortunately Phil missed it but it’s experience and when you get this kind of experience next time he will be better,” he said.

Guardiola went on to praise West Ham, who are competing for a European spot again this season. “One of our toughest games at home last season was against them,” he added.

“They are doing well in the Premier League, the Europa League and now they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. A fantastic team, a fantastic manager.”

City’s next match is a league clash against Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace. The Hammers, meanwhile, travel to Aston Villa.

Man City ‘losing ground’ in striker race

Reports claim City are falling behind AC Milan in the hunt for a Brazilian striker.

Guardiola is in need of a new forward after Sergio Aguero left in the summer. He was hoping to land Harry Kane but the Citizens could not complete a deal.

Internacional’s Yuri Alberto is one man on their wish list. The player notched 18 goals in all competitions last term.

Sport Witness, citing reports in the Brazilian press, state that Milan have a ‘verbal agreement’ in place with Alberto.

They look set to pay around €20m for his signature. That’s despite his release clause being worth an astonishing €80m.

The news means City will have to act fast if they want Alberto to become Aguero’s successor.
