Phil Foden new contract confirmed, as Man City star fires warning of what convinced him over Guardiola

Phil Foden, October 2022

Phil Foden has claimed that he had no hesitation in signing a new Manchester City contract because of the obvious pathway to more trophies.

The 22-year-old has penned fresh terms at the Etihad Stadium until 2027 in a major show of devotion to his boyhood club. He broke through a few seasons ago and has not looked back, reaching impressive heights.

Indeed, Foden’s winning goal against Tottenham in the 2018/19 campaign that helped City clinch the Premier League title was a sign of his growing importance back then.

However, Foden has built on that success and now has four Premier League winners’ medals in his growing cabinet.

And the England international has said he had no doubt that he saw his future continuing under manager Pep Guardiola.

“It’s hard to put into words how happy I am to have signed this contract,” Foden told City’s official website. “It’s a dream come true.

“I have been a City fan all my life. I’ve trained here for so many years and I’ve even been a ballboy. I love this club so much, so to know I am going to be a part of it until 2027 feels amazing.

“I’ve improved a lot in recent years and so much of that is down to Pep and his staff, who guide me every single day on the training field. Working with them gives me the best chance of improving even more and becoming the best player I can be.”

“With the squad we have here, I feel I can keep learning and winning trophies. Those are the two most important things to me.”

City sporting director Txiki Begiristain added that “there is so much more to come” from Foden.

He said: “His natural talent and ability are obvious, but his hard work, professionalism and dedication make him really special. He loves football more than anything and his desire to improve is really incredible.

“We feel he can progress further and become even better than he is today.

“By signing this contract, he now has stability and can focus absolutely everything on becoming one of the best players in the world, which we feel he can be.”

Foden has no doubt been convinced to sign his new contract by the arrival of Erling Haaland to City’s front line. The Norway sensation has scored 20 goals in 13 games since signing from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

And he is helping Foden improve his statistics. The Englishman has netted seven goals and assisted three others in the same number of games as Haaland.

New contract crucial for City

City definitely have one of the most promising players in Europe in their ranks and tying him down to a new contract was crucial.

What’s more, the fact that Foden is having a major impact on one of the best teams in the world is adding to his stock.

All that is without mentioning the fact that Foden is still only 22. He is nowhere near his prime yet and has proven his ability to play in a number of attacking roles.

He is therefore a major force for England and will be so at the World Cup in Qatar.

Foden did not get many minutes during Euro 2020, but there is a sense that his continued development since then could offer him a greater say under Gareth Southgate this time around.
