Predicted Manchester City team for trip to Southampton: Lesser seen stars could get run out

Pep Guardiola speaking at a press conference

With every intention of going as far as they can in each competition, the predicted Manchester City team for the next round of the FA Cup could still see some top players involved.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been in good form in all competitions of late. Indeed, City have lost just one game during this calendar year.

The Etihad outfit have drawn their last two, against Crystal Palace and Sporting Lisbon. They did, however, advance to the next round of the Champions League thanks to a 5-0 aggregate victory over Sporting.

City won in the last round of the FA Cup against Peterborough. Guardiola utilised some first-team stars who had not been all too involved ahead of that game, and he will likely do the same for Sunday’s tie against Southampton.

The Spaniard is clearly as eager to do well in the cup as he is in all other competitions, per his pre-match press conference.

“In the Premier League we are winning. Right now, the destiny is in our hands. We are closer for games in the FA Cup, I don’t count the competitions. I know how difficult it will be at Southampton. Prepare to travel good, play well, and enjoy,” he said.

“We do what we have done so far. Get in the six yard box and score a goal. Southampton will be different to Crystal Palace. Before, trying to be that they know every game is a final, Premier League, Champions League, Sunday, be ourselves.”

Last time out – Crystal Palace 0-0 Manchester City

In City’s most recent fixture, Ederson started in net. The two centre-backs ahead of him were John Stones and Aymeric Laporte – Ruben Dias is still injured.

Kyle Walker played on the right side of the back four, with Joao Cancelo on the left.

Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne played across the midfield.

Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez were the three attackers. The attacking threat was lacking, as City had just four attempts on target.

This time around, Zack Steffen could start in net, giving Ederson a break from the action. Kyle Walker could start at right-back, with Oleksandr Zinchenko – who played in the last round – at left-back.

The centre-back positions may be filled by Stones and Nathan Ake.

There could be a big switch up in the midfield. Foden might drop back from his advanced role, to pair with Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan; that trio played the last FA Cup tie.

Further forward, Grealish could start following his goal in the last round, along with Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Predicted Manchester City XI: Steffen; Walker, Stones, Ake, Zinchenko; Foden, Fernandinho, Gundogan; Sterling, Jesus, Grealish
