PSG set for Mauricio Pochettino U-turn but Man City still have Pep Guardiola concerns

Reports in France claim Paris Saint Germain are eager to land Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola next summer when they look to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino, 50, has been with the Parisians since January 2021, guiding his side to the Ligue 1 title in 2021-2022. However, his position at Parc des Princes has come into question on many occasions during the last season. A failure to land the Champions League is behind the unrest at the club.

PSG led Real Madrid 1-0 after the first leg of their last-16 tie but a 3-1 loss in the Bernabeu saw them eliminated. It was thought that the club’s owners would jettison the former Tottenham chief at the conclusion of the campaign.

However, reports now claim that they will keep hold of him for another 12 months before targeting Guardiola. French outlet L’Equipe suggest that they ‘dream’ of hiring Guardiola.

The Spanish tactician has one year left on his deal with the Premier League champions. He has now won the title four times since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in July 2016

The former Spain midfielder has also secured the EFL Cup on four occasions and won the 2018-2019 FA Cup.

But he has also failed to deliver Europe’s top domestic prize and that remains a burning ambition for the ex-Barcelona manager. City looked destined to take on Liverpool in this season’s final on May 28.

But a late capitulation against Real in the semi-finals saw them exit the competition after extra time. They will go again next season and will have hot-shot Erling Haaland in the ranks to bolster their chances.

Guardiola calling the shots

Manchester City have made it clear that they would love to keep their boss at the club for many more years. He is still very much at the top of his powers and was instrumental in the Citizens holding off Liverpool to claim the title.

But the former Bayern Munich chief made it clear earlier this month that he will not extend his contract until the present one expires.

That will be at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino managing Paris Saint-Germain

It is thought that Guardiola is keen to manage PSG at some stage of his career. And a move across the Channel might be made easier if City do finally manage to win the Champions League next term.
