Man City make Raheem Sterling contract decision to give Arsenal firm summer transfer signal

Man City winger Raheem Sterling

Manchester City will make a decision over the future of Raheem Sterling this summer as Arsenal circle for a deal, a report has claimed.

The 27-year-old is entering the prime of his career and has firmly found his feet at the Etihad Stadium. While he impressed as a youngster at Liverpool, Pep Guardiola has taken his game to the next level.

As a result, he has played a key role in the nine major trophies won under Guardiola at City.

Despite that, though, doubt has surfaced over Sterling‘s future, especially towards the end of last season when he struggled for game time. What’s more, he will enter the final year of his City contract this summer.

Arsenal have been linked with a swoop for Sterling amid their search for attacking reinforcements.

And according to The Telegraph, they have received a boost over their hopes of signing the England international.

City rarely let players in their prime run down their contracts. As such, they will definitely make a decision on Sterling’s future either way this summer.

Arsenal are therefore biding their time and exploring a potential move ahead of City making their intentions clear.

Sterling said before City’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid that it would be “selfish” to talk about his future before the season is over.

Guardiola’s side are on course for a fourth Premier League title in five years. Indeed, the focus on the title has become clearer after their dramatic exit from Europe against Madrid.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is eyeing Sterling up after the pair worked together at the Etihad Stadium.

Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant before he took the Gunners gig and so knows the player well.

Sterling could seek change

Sterling has made 337 appearances for City since his move from Liverpool in 2015.

In that time, he has contributed 130 goals and 93 assists, as well as becoming a vital player for England boss Gareth Southgate.

As with the rest of the City players and Guardiola, the ultimate quest is to win the Champions League.

And with Sterling only having one year left on his deal, he would likely have to renew his contract to have another shot next year, amid City’s stance on his future.

At the same time, though, Sterling may want a new adventure in the Premier League.

While Arsenal are not ready to fight for the title – and instead chasing a place in the Champions League – Arteta has built exciting foundations for his future.
