Riyad Mahrez to continue ‘unforgettable’ Man City success after champions announce new contract

Riyad Mahrez has described his time at Manchester City so far as “unforgettable” – and it will be continuing for another three years after he signed a contract extension.

Mahrez was entering the final year of his existing contract at the Etihad Stadium. But unlike Raheem Sterling, who left for Chelsea when in a similar situation, the Algeria international has committed his future to the club.

In a club statement on Friday evening, Manchester City announced a contract renewal for Mahrez until 2025. If he fulfils his new terms, he will have represented the club for seven years following a 2018 transfer from Leicester City.

Now, Mahrez is guaranteed to add to his 189 appearances, 63 goals and 45 assists for Manchester City. He will also be hoping his medal collection increases; City have already won three Premier League titles, three EFL Cups and one FA Cup with Mahrez in their squad.

The 31-year-old has thanked the club for the way they have pushed him to improve in what has been a memorable spell so far.

“I’m very happy to sign the new deal,” Mahrez told the club’s official website.

“I have enjoyed every single minute of my time here. It’s a pleasure to be part of such an incredible club.

“To have helped us achieve the success we have enjoyed in the past four seasons has been unforgettable and made us all hungry to look to achieve even more.

“I would also like to thank Pep, Txiki and the coaching staff, both for the way they have helped me to develop as a player and for pushing me to continue to improve.

“Now I just want to try and play my part in helping us be successful next season and beyond.”

Begiristain explains what makes Riyad Mahrez so effective

City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, believes Mahrez is one of the world’s most exciting players in his position.

Citing how much head coach Pep Guardiola enjoys working with him, Begiristain explained why City are glad Mahrez has renewed.

“Riyad has played a major part in our success in the four years since he joined us, and we are all delighted he has agreed this new deal,” he said.

“He has brought so much to the club with his skill, talent, commitment, and desire to win evident from the moment he first arrived.

“I also know that Pep and the coaching staff relish working with Riyad.

“He is one of the most exciting wingers operating in the game and we are all very excited to know he will be part of our ongoing drive to try and achieve more success.”

Mahrez’s new deal means he will be spending the rest of his prime years as part of a powerful Man City team.
