Rodri has committed his long-term future to Man City after signing a contract extension running until 2027, and revealed what the Cityzens can provide that their rivals can’t.
The Spaniard, 26, has developed into one of the world’s finest holding midfielders at the Etihad. Rodri arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and quickly usurped Fernandinho in Pep Guardiola’s engine room.
His contract has two years left to run and City had recently snapped up Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.
That could’ve been viewed as Guardiola covering their bases if Rodri’s long-term future wasn’t in Manchester.
However, any speculation has been emphatically put to bed after Man City announced Rodri has penned fresh terms.
The announcement came via their official website, with Rodri signing on until 2027.
In response to the new deal, Rodri stressed his total happiness with life at the Etihad. He also revealed his hunger for silverware and claimed City are unquestionably the best place to be to satisfy that demand.
“Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career,” he said. “I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the Club and the manager pushes me every single day.
“I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help. They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work.
Trophy desire keeps on growing
“We have been very successful since I came here, which is something that makes me very proud. But to be honest, that success has made me even more hungry for me. Once you start winning big titles, you don’t want to stop.
“City, I feel, offers me the best chance of winning trophies and that’s why I am so pleased to be staying here for longer.”
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “Rodri has been exceptional since coming here, so I am delighted we have managed to agree this new deal.
“He is the perfect example of what a top professional should be: he has a fantastic attitude, lives his life in the right way, takes care of his body and trains hard every single day. That is a manager’s dream, and I know Pep loves working with him.
“He has improved a lot since coming here and, for me, he is now one of the best in the world in his position.”
Rodri has a point
Over the last five seasons, Man City have scooped up 11 major honours including four Premier League titles.
That is the same number of trophies lifted by Liverpool and Chelsea combined over the same timespan.
What’s more, the one area of Guardiola’s squad that had come under scrutiny in recent times was centre-forward.
Guardiola chose to operate with a series of false nines once Sergio Aguero departed. City remained a formidable foe, though the arrival of Erling Haaland has provided their front line with a new, potent edge.
Liverpool will no doubt run City close on all fronts once again. In fact, the Reds did outscore City two to one in the trophy count last year.
However, looking at the bigger picture, it cannot be argued City is the place to be to ensure your trophy cabinet remains full to the brim.
