Sensational Man City signing gets ‘here we go’ treatment from Fabrizio Romano as first part of medical done
Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Josko Gvardiol from German club RB Leipzig, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
It is thought that the deal for the outstanding Croatian centre-back could be worth around £86million, which would be a world-record transfer fee for a defender.
Romano adds that Gvardiol has already agreed personal terms and has completed the first part of his medical with the move on the verge of being completed.
The centre-back, who can also play at left-back, has been linked with a number of clubs since he rose to prominence over the last couple of years.
Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool have all shown an interest in the 21-year-old, but it’s City who are now on the brink of signing arguably the world’s best centre-back.
Gvardiol has also impressed on the international stage with Croatia, helping his country finish third at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Leipzig star will become the second Croatian player to join Pep Guardiola’s side this summer after City also brought in midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea.
Gvardiol, who came through the ranks at Dinamo Zagreb and has been at Leipzig for two seasons, joins a strong group of City centre-backs that includes Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Aymeric Laporte, although the latter has been strongly tipped to leave while Stones spent the majority of the closing stages of last season playing as a holding midfielder.
One in, one out for City as Mahrez deal agreed
While Gvardiol is set to arrive in a big-money deal, it looks like Riyad Mahrez is on his way out of the club.
City are said to have agreed a £30m fee with Saudi side Al Ahli after Mahrez told Guardiola he was unhappy with how his own end of the season played out despite the club winning an historic treble.
But with Mahrez seemingly in his way, Guardiola is expected to make a move for another winger to help fill that void.
City begin their pre-season campaign with a clash against Yokohama F. Marinos on July 23.
