Man City star’s switch to European giants back on after Guardiola ‘veto;’ two others could follow
Pep Guardiola ‘vetoed’ an offer from Barcelona for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo in January, according to reports.
The Portugal international ultimately signed for Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season, where his form has been a bit of a mixed bag.
Now, Barcelona could potentially come back in for Cancelo, after it has been revealed that he is the Catalan’s ‘favourite’ transfer target.
This is according to Spanish outlet Sport, who claim that Guardiola personally blocked an offer from Barcelona for Cancelo.
Bayern Munich have the option to buy him permanently this summer. However, this has not deterred Barca manager Xavi, who is determined to sign the Man City star.
Sport add that right-back Thomas Meunier is another of Barca’s key targets, but they have prioritised a move for Cancelo.
However, due to their ongoing financial issues, the Spanish giants would only be able to afford to sign him on loan, which wouldn’t be ideal for Man City.
But, because Cancelo ‘wishes to come’ to the Camp Nou, they believe they have a chance of bringing him in.
Barcelona plotting triple Man City raid
As mentioned, a loan would, most likely, be the only viable way for Barca to sign Cancelo this summer.
Therefore, Guardiola would have to do his former club a favour by agreeing to such a deal. However, if another club make a sizeable bid for Cancelo, it seems likely Man City would accept it.
Interestingly, though, he isn’t the only player Barca are interested in. Indeed, as noted by TEAMtalk, Bernardo Silva could also potentially make the switch to the Catalans this summer.
Guardiola will reportedly ‘not stand in the way’ of Silva leaving. He has made no secret of his desire to join Barca, either, after they came in for him last summer, as well as in January.
However, with a price tag of £75m, they may find it difficult to find the funds to sign him. As a result, they will most likely need to sell several players before signing Silva.
Ilkay Gundogan, however, could head to Barca on a free transfer this summer. The Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season.
Barca’s interest in Gundogan has been widely reported. The deal would be ideal for them given their financial situation, too.
However, the midfielder has been offered a contract extension by Man City, so any potential move to the Catalans will depend on whether he accepts that or not.
Cancelo, Silva and Gundogan would certainly turn Barca into a formidable force once again, so it will be interesting to see if they can sign the Man City trio this summer. Although, they may find it difficult.
