Man City transfer news: Versatile Serie A prospect catches attention, setting up Atletico Madrid battle

Giorgio Scalvini celebrating for Atalanta

Manchester City and other clubs among the European elite have taken notice of rising Italian star Giorgio Scalvini, according to reports.

Scalvini came through the Atalanta academy and made his breakthrough with their first team last season. In total, he appeared 21 times in all competitions in his debut campaign as a professional.

This season, he is continuing to earn the trust of Gian Piero Gasperini. He has played in four of their seven Serie A matches so far. Most recently, he made his first start of the season, playing in midfield against Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Scalvini made the most of his opportunity, scoring the winning goal from the edge of the box. It represented the latest stage of his recent rise, which has also seen him make his senior Italy debut in June.

With their under-21s for the current international break, Scalvini is also beginning to be discussed as a potential option for some of Europe’s biggest clubs to look at.

For example, La Gazzetta Dello Sport has revealed that Manchester City are now keeping tabs on the teenager, who is mainly a centre-back despite where he has recently been playing.

His contract with Atalanta is only due to run until the end of the 2022-23 season. But if he keeps establishing himself in the way he has been doing, offers will likely be on the table.

Even in the summer, Atletico Madrid tried to sign him, according to the report. The Spanish giants remain keen on Scalvini now, but Manchester City have joined them in the race for his signature.

There is nothing to suggest they are going to immediately make a move. But it appears as if the Premier League champions will be watching Scalvini’s development closely.

Giorgio Scalvini has broad horizons

Their plans for him were he to join remain unclear. Obviously, a squad like Manchester City’s is already brimming with elite players who may be hard to compete with.

But they are always keen to invest with an eye to the future. They have helped a lot of young talents develop in recent years, either integrating them into their first team or selling them on for profit.

At the age of 18, it is too soon to predict what Scalvini’s career might have in store. But he has the world at his feet right now and will not go unnoticed if he keeps getting gametime for Atalanta.

The club from Bergamo do not have any European football on offer for him this season after finishing outside the top seven in the 2021-22 Serie A. However, there will still be plenty of opportunities for him to develop in the domestic game in Italy.

His horizons could be broader than that in the long term, though. Moving to Manchester City would be a step up in his career, but he might have to show more patience to play for them.

It is all about his potential right now, though. There could be big decisions to make regarding his future in 2023.
