Kompany secures CJ Egan-Riley for Burnley before booking in medical for second Man City man

Vincent Kompany, Anderlecht v Club Brugge May 2022

Manchester City academy product CJ Egan-Riley has completed a transfer to Burnley, where he could soon be joined by another teammate.

Egan-Riley made his Manchester City debut last season in the Carabao Cup, back in September. He went on to feature once each in the Champions League and Premier League as well.

At under-23 level, the defender served as their captain. However, he has now left them to join up with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.

The Championship side announced a deal for the Manchester-born starlet on July 1st, after his contract with Manchester City expired.

Egan-Riley told Burnley’s official website: “I’m buzzing to be here, happy the deal is over the line and I’m a Burnley player.

“I just can’t wait to get pre-season started and get the season underway.”

Former City captain Kompany added: “CJ is a player we have been watching closely for a long time. He is a promising and talented footballer with an excellent mindset and attitude.

“We are delighted he has agreed to join. CJ has shown a real hunger and he wants to learn and succeed at Burnley.

“He fits perfectly into our culture and he is a fantastic addition to our squad.”

CJ Egan-Riley not only Man City starlet on way to Turf Moor

Reports are indicating Egan-Riley will soon be joined at Burnley by another City academy product.

According to Football Insider, Taylor Harwood-Bellis will be undergoing a medical with the Lancashire club on Friday.

The centre-back spent the first half of the 2021-22 season playing under Kompany while on loan with Anderlecht. He then saw the season out back in England with Stoke City.

Now, it appears he is on the verge of reuniting with Kompany at Burnley. The source claims the two clubs have agreed a deal for the 20-year-old.

City have granted permission for his medical to take place ahead of the move.

Kompany using connections to build for Burnley

Kompany has inherited an interesting challenge by replacing Sean Dyche in the Burnley hotseat.

Their long stay in the Premier League came to an end last season. Several players have made way ahead of an intriguing rebuild.

For example, they have lost centre-back duo Ben Mee and James Tarkowski. The dependable partnership will be tough to replace, but Burnley are working on it.

Kompany may be trying to change the perception of Burnley’s style. In the process, he is turning to his former employers at City for help.

It could lead to him landing a few good opportunities in the transfer market. The additions of Egan-Riley and Harwood-Bellis will provide them with a platform for the future.

And if a defender as good as Kompany was approves of them, they could be suitable reinforcements at Turf Moor.
