Man City pressing to beat dream suitor to impressive Prem star with falling price tag

Liverpool targets Raphinha and Youri Tielemans

Manchester City are maintaining frequent contact with the entourage of Youri Tielemans – but the Leicester City midfielder reportedly has another transfer preference.

This summer may be the time for Tielemans to move on from Leicester. He is out of contract in 2023, so must weigh up whether to renew or leave. If he does not sign a new deal, the Foxes could cash in on him at the end of the season, while they still can.

The Belgium international has proven himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders since joining from Monaco in 2019. He has been keeping his options open as a result.

According to Foot Mercato, two sides are showing particularly strong interest in Tielemans. Man City are battling Real Madrid to win the race for his transfer.

A move to Man City would keep Tielemans in the Premier League, but elevate him to a higher level. The current champions feel he would fit perfectly in their project and have been in touch with his representatives in recent months.

Pep Guardiola is believed to be an admirer of the 24-year-old. Therefore, Man City could try to take him from their fellow Premier League side.

However, the report also warns that Real Madrid would be Tielemans’ dream option. He has never played in La Liga before, but they could give him the opportunity.

Real are aiming to evolve their midfield, which for years has been led by Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. They want to look to the future and could target Tielemans to push through their strategy.

The interest in a transfer union is mutual, although it remains to be seen whether Madrid will act.

Foot Mercato predict that Leicester will cash in on the former Anderlecht product in the summer. In fact, they believe the asking price will have dropped to €40m.

It would be better than losing him for nothing a year later, but still represents a relative bargain for a player of Tielemans’ talent.

City and Real would both in theory be capable of paying the asking price. It is now a waiting game until the summer to see who strikes.

Tielemans still open to Leicester stay

Tielemans has not ruled out the option of staying with Leicester, either. After consecutive fifth-placed finishes, this season has been more challenging for the Foxes, but they can still have an optimistic outlook for the future.

Asked recently if he could stay at the King Power Stadium, Tielemans said: “Yes, why not?

“This is a club where you have the best environment you can have, especially with this new training ground. The people around you just want the best for you.

“It’s brilliant to be here. I really like it here. We’ll see what’s coming in the future.

“But I think the environment is just perfect to win trophies here.

“You can’t predict the future but I think everything around the club and inside the club is made for it.”

Tielemans scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final last season to win his first medal with Leicester. Whether he will stay long enough to lift more trophies – or aim to do so with traditionally bigger clubs – remains to be seen.
