Manchester United are inching closer towards the signing of Adrien Rabiot after holding what is described as a day of positive talks with his mother and agent, Veronique Rabiot.
United have locked on to the Juventus midfielder after becoming frustrated at their inability to close on the Frenkie de Jong deal. They have tried for several weeks to bring De Jong to Old Trafford, with the deal still dragging on and United seemingly no nearer his signature. As such, it’s no surprise to see them turning their sights elsewhere.
It seems a deal to sign Rabiot will be much more straight forward too. United have quickly thrashed out a transfer agreement with Juventus, who are eager to sell with only one year left.
His departure will come as a blow to Massimiliano Allegri’s side, with the player a regular in his side. But the Bianconeri are unwilling to see him walk away as a free agent so are understanably keen to cash in now. United are likely to be paying around £17.5m for the midfielder.
Indeed, the club simply has to negotiate transfer terms with the player and his agent to reach a full agreement. Now, according to Goal Italia’s Romeo Agresti, those talks took place today. He describes the talks as being ‘positive’ between United and Veronique Rabiot too.
And while there is ‘no agreement yet’, the talks are reportedly ‘developing positively’.
As such, common ground may soon be reached between all parties on a deal to take him to Old Trafford.
Adrien Rabiot demands to Man Utd revealed
In a separate article, il Gazzetta dello Sport have also made clear his mother’s demands for her son. They state that Rabiot would like United to match the current €8m a year deal – around £129,000 a week – he receives at Juventus. That would likely be over a four-year deal, potentially keeping him at United until 2026.
Veronique Rabiot is also reportedly asking for a hefty bonus in her son’s deal should the club qualify for the Champions League. That is to be paid as a one-off bonus in each and every year they reach the Champions League during his time at the club.
Rabiot is also looking for some personal guarantees over the tactical project and where he fits into the club’s side. To that end, a personal chat between the player and manager Erik ten Hag is due to take place on Wednesday.
More encouragingly, however, il Gazzetta does report that the player is keen to make the move to United. And despite their lack of Champions League football, the player is reportedly excited by the prospective transfer.
If all goes well on Wednesday, Manchester United could reach an agreement by the end of the day.
Furthermore, he could even be signed in good time to take his place in the matchday squad this weekend.
United face a trip to Brentford on Saturday teatime hoping for a positive result after losing their opener.
Rabiot and his mother bring a certain drama
It’ll certainly be a relief to United if they can get this transfer over the line. For all intents and purposes, dealing with Veronique Rabiot is known to be something of a tricky task.
Known as a tough negotiator, she reportedly brings a certain type of drama to both transfer proceedings and other aspects of her son’s career.
That’s certainly the viewpoint of European football expert, Kevin Hatchard. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk show, he reckons Rabiot is technically a step up from Scott McTominay and Fred.
But he does claim his mother brings with her son and added element.
“But there is drama attached to him – there’s no doubt about that,” Hatchard said. “He was on the standby list for the 2018 World Cup and refused to be on it for France.
“Adrien Rabiot sulked his way out of Paris and left in really acrimonious circumstances. You then have his mother Veronique who provides her own drama.
Is Adrien Rabiot really the answer to Manchester United’s midfield woes?
With reports emerging that a fee has been agreed with Juventus for the Frenchman, is Adrien Rabiot really the answer to Manchester United’s midfield issues?
“When the French went out of the European Championships, she was with the other parents of players and started laying into Paul Pogba’s parents, Kylian Mbappe’s parents, saying ‘they should be playing better, you should have a word with them’.
“She brings here own drama, as well as Adrien.”
United, meanwhile, are also exploring a number of new striker options. To that end, a report says they have been offered the chance to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
