Failed Man Utd summer transfer could go through in January as Juventus opt to sell international player

Alvaro Morata and Adrien Rabiot

After failing to sign Adrien Rabiot from Juventus in the summer, Manchester United could complete the transfer when the January window opens, according to a report.

Manchester United set their sights on Rabiot in August, amid their struggle to land Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. According to The Athletic, Rabiot was viewed by Manchester United as a possible midfield partner for De Jong, rather than as a replacement signing.

However, the Red Devils couldn’t get either deal over the line before the summer window shut on September 1. Rabiot was asking for a massive wage increase to join Manchester United and Erik ten Hag’s side were unwilling to meet his demands.

Rabiot also had concerns about whether United were the right club for him, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. As such, the central midfielder remained at Juventus.

United were left disappointed in their pursuit of De Jong, too. He pledged his allegiance to Barca and told United he would not be moving to Old Trafford.

The Manchester giants did manage to land Casemiro from Real Madrid. Plus, they had brought in Christian Eriksen on a free transfer earlier in the summer.

But Ten Hag could still ask for another midfielder to bolster his ranks as United eye a return to their former glory.

With this in mind, they might be given the opportunity to chase Rabiot’s signature in January.

Adrien Rabiot to leave Juventus

According to Italian source Tuttomercatoweb, the France international will be leaving Juve this winter.

His contract expires in June. To prevent the star leaving for free, Juve will sell him in January. They won’t get a major fee for him but should still be able to pick up a decent sum.

United will surely be aware of the situation and could reignite their interest in Rabiot over the coming weeks.

His contract demands will still pose an issue. But with United saving money on the transfer fee, due to his contract situation, they might have enough funds to offer him an acceptable package.

United will face competition from one of Europe’s biggest clubs to sign Rabiot, however. Tuttomercatoweb put reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the frame for a move.

The 27-year-old spent time in PSG’s academy and made 227 appearances in their senior team before leaving three years ago.

A reunion between PSG and Rabiot is now on the cards. Due to this, United will have to get their act together if they want to win the transfer race.

While Rabiot will become available in January, Ten Hag will probably torpedo any United pursuit for a couple of reasons.

First of all, De Jong remains his number one midfield target and Rabiot doesn’t quite live up to the Dutchman.

United spending big on Rabiot’s wages would make them less likely to go after De Jong in 2023.

Secondly, the Frenchman has a tendency to cause problems in the dressing room. And his mother Veronique, who also acts as his agent, can cause other issues as well.

Meanwhile, United have released a brief statement after Cristiano Ronaldo was charged with “improper and/or violent” conduct by the Football Association.
