Ivan Toney is one of the “brilliant strikers” in the domestic market that Manchester United should be pursuing, according to a pundit.
Man Utd have been looking for attacking reinforcements in the current transfer window, but are yet to bring any in. Their signings have instead come in defence and midfield. Still, it remains a priority for them to add to their depth up front.
Earlier this summer, they lost Edinson Cavani at the end of his contract. Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncertain future has certainly not helped since. It has prompted links with a plethora of forwards, especially centrally.
For example, Marko Arnautovic was someone that United looked at recently before putting that pursuit to one side. Since then, there have been a number of alternative suggestions, many coming from foreign leagues.
But according to former Manchester City goalkeeper, Shay Given, the Red Devils could do better by looking within the Premier League – or at least having a more focused approach.
Given told talkSPORT: “It feels like Man Utd have a bucket of names and they are dipping into it and pulling out a name.
“It seems like there is no plan.”
When Brentford forward, Ivan Toney, was suggested as someone United could go for, Given agreed it would make more sense.
Ivan Toney talked up for Manchester United move
He continued: “I don’t understand it either. They are not the Man Utd of old who could take their pick of the best players in Europe.
“They are shopping in a different market.
“There are some brilliant strikers and Ivan Toney is a good example. Brentford fans won’t be happy to hear that, but there are a few other clubs sniffing around as well.”
Toney scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season, helping Brentford stay up after their promotion. He recently enjoyed playing in their 4-0 win over Manchester United, even if he didn’t get any of the goals himself.
There have actually been some sporadic links between Toney and a move to Man Utd. It seems Given is of the opinion they might not have been taking him seriously enough yet.
After already adding Christian Eriksen to their squad following an experience with Brentford, it remains to be seen if they will heed any advice to bid for his former teammate, Toney.
