Alan Shearer tells ‘loyal’ superstar to seriously consider Man Utd move, with blessing of fans

Alan Shearer, January 2023

Alan Shearer has suggested he would “look at my options” in Harry Kane’s shoes, as Tottenham fans can’t complain if he chooses to leave, amid major Manchester United interest.

A lot has been made of the future of Kane as the end of the season has gotten nearer. That the striker has never won a trophy with Tottenham has led to suggestions he should move on.

That’s supported by the fact he’s been one of the league’s deadliest forwards for pretty much his entire top-flight career.

That’s evidenced by him now sitting second on the all-time top scorers’ list in the Premier League, with 211 goals. This season has been one of Kane’s best, adding further reason for him to make a move.

He’s bettered his current tally of 28 league goals on just two occasions. Indeed, he scored 29 goals and then 30 goals in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, respectively.

Tottenham finished second in the first of those seasons, following that up with a third-placed finish. As such, the lethal striker was seemingly thriving in the right environment.

Spurs have fallen off massively this term, currently sitting in eighth. Indeed, it seems Kane is now a big fish in a small pond and a move to a bigger side would make sense, and allow him to contribute to a winning side.

Manchester United could well be the beneficiaries of Kane moving on. They’ve been heavily linked, and it was recently reported they’ve firmly settled on the Spurs man as their no 1 target for the summer, and could smash their record transfer fee to secure him.

Shearer tells Kane to consider Man Utd move

Former Premier League striker Shearer – who holds the league goalscoring record – has suggested Kane should seriously consider that move.

“If it was me, personally, in his situation now – yeah, I would look at my options,” he said on Match of the Day.

Indeed, hearing that from a man whose goal tally he wants to beat one day should tell Kane the grass may well be greener away from Tottenham.

And despite all he’s given to the club, Shearer believes the forward would have the blessing of their fans if he did choose to leave now.

“He has been so loyal to Tottenham and so brilliant for Tottenham. I don’t think any Tottenham fan could complain if he said: ‘Look, I’ve done my time and I have got to look elsewhere,'” Shearer added.

Right time for Kane to move on

Tottenham’s poor season should tell Kane it’s the right time to bid farewell. Indeed, a striker of his quality should be playing for a club fighting for the title, not trying to cling on to a European football place.

The move to United seems to fit him perfectly. They’re missing a deadly striker, but have improved a lot during Erik ten Hag’s first season.

Adding that missing piece, in a player who has been so deadly in the league for years, could be what they need to become title contenders.

It would also allow Kane to play alongside better players, and continue banging in goals, in order to edge towards Shearer’s record, while perhaps winning some trophies, too.
