Alex Telles faces tempting transfer decision as Man Utd man targeted by dreaming suitor

Alex Telles playing for Manchester United

Alex Telles has become a target for FC Porto if Manchester United make him available for transfer this summer, according to a report from Portugal.

Manchester United signed Telles from Porto in 2020 after his four seasons in the Primeira Liga. The Brazil international arrived at Old Trafford to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who seemed to be stagnating.

But Shaw responded well to Telles’ arrival. The Englishman kept the new signing out of the team for much of last season, with injuries also not helping Telles.

This season, the 29-year-old has been given more responsibility. After just eight Premier League starts in 2021-22, he has been given 17 this time around.

However, Shaw will still end the season with more, having started 19 ahead of the final matchday. Therefore, Telles’ future could come into question.

According to Correio da Manha, his former club Porto are keeping tabs on his situation. They feel a second spell with the club would be a sensible move.

Aware that incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may want to put his own stamp on the squad, Porto are on alert in case Telles is one of those to be sacrificed by the Premier League outfit.

One appealing factor about Telles is his ability from set pieces. Porto want to find someone capable of making them more threatening from free kicks and corners, which they feel the Man Utd man would. After all, he scored three free kicks for them before.

In fact, Telles was a goal threat in all phases of play during his Porto days. He scored 26 goals in 195 appearances for them in total, as well as contributing 57 assists.

Now, Porto could try and lure him back so they can benefit from more. It is not yet clear how much such a deal may cost them, for a player contracted to United until 2024.

But Telles would not be averse to the transfer. Indeed, he recently admitted in an interview he would be willing to return to Porto one day.

Porto a better fit for Alex Telles

For a variety of reasons, Telles has been unable to build up consistency in the Premier League.

His previous spell with Porto was more productive, so perhaps they are simply a better fit for him. He would not be the first player to fail to meet Man Utd standards but thrive elsewhere.

And given that he will turn 30 during next season, he will not want his career to fade out.

Re-joining Porto could allow him to become a more regular starter again. He still has something to offer, so if a deal is viable, it may make sense.
